Auberge L'Apéro Reviews

Auberge L'Apéro provides good service for the money, provided you can get used to the squeaky mattresses.

The Location

Hostel L'Apero is within walking distance of some of Montréal's main attractions; it is also very near a metro and bus stop with a straight shot to the central bus and train stations. The bus to and from the airport also passes close by. The neighborhood has plenty of restaurant choices in a range of budgets.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The dorms are big enough, with windows that open and lockers for each bed. The upper bunks don't have shelves or lights, and are a bit wobbly. The dorm doors lock automatically, making it safer but a bit inconvenient if you forget to take your key with you to the bathroom in the middle of the night. The big problem, however, is the squeakiness of the mattresses. These are not merely squeaky mattresses -- they may be the squeakiest you've ever slept on, even if you've been staying in a lot of hostels. You'll probably get used to it, but it won't make for very good sleep on the first night. The hostel has some female-only dorms, which is nice for those who prefer that. The bathrooms are fine, and are clean and plentiful enough for the number of dorm beds. They even have some nice decorations.

Common Spaces

The kitchen is a bit small if there's a crowd, but it's well stocked and the free breakfast is surprisingly good. It's very bread-centric, but there's peanut butter and a fancy selection of cold cereals. There's also another common room with a TV, table, and couch. These provide plenty of space for friendly guest interaction. The hostel has a free internet computer, a washer and dryer for guest use, a book exchange, games, and lots of info on the city. Office hours are limited, so if you're going to arrive late or leave early, arrange with them beforehand -- they'll work with you. The entryway is a bit grim, but don't let that scare you off.

Summary

If you want a budget place to stay in Montréal and don't mind the squeaky mattresses, Hostel L'Apero is a good place to go. Be sure to check out the basket at reception full of ideas on what to do in town -- it's a very nice touch.

Description

Auberge L'Apéro is not just a regular hostel that happens to be in Montreal; L'Apéro is like Montreal. It reflects the city's vibrant social life and European style. Don't just visit the city, be part of it at Auberge L'Apéro.

Located in the heart of downtown, Auberge L'Apéro offers you safe, comfortable accommodations just a heartbeat from the action.

With only 12 beds, we offer a cozy, personalized atmosphere on two floors of an old 1880s gray stone with all the amenities you expect from a hostel, and many that you don't. The rooms are bright with hardwood floors and some interior brick walls that add an air of coziness to the Auberge. The second floor contains the reception area, the store, common rooms, and the laundry. The top floor is the residence that includes the dorms, bathroom facilities, and kitchen.

One of the features of Auberge L'Apéro is our beautiful terrace where you can relax and enjoy your continental breakfast in the sunshine, or come back for an apéro at the end of wonderful afternoon of sightseeing before heading out to dinner. We also feature a fully equipped kitchen, a communal TV room with free Internet and hi-speed Wi-fi access, and laundry facilities. Most importantly, there is no curfew so you will be free to explore the city and its famous (and fabulous!) nightlife to your heart's content.

What sets Auberge L'Apéro apart from other hostels is our attention to detail. We treat you as guests, not passers-through, and you will find our personalized service not unlike the service you would find in a hotel.

Location and Contact

Location

• Where we are is just as important as what we are.
• Situated on Mackay Street, a quiet side street just steps from Saint-Catherine Street, the city's main downtown shopping district, Auberge L'Apéro is within walking distance of most of Montreal's attractions including Old Montreal, the museums of Fine Arts, Contemporary Art, Natural History, Architecture, and Montreal History, as well as the Bell Center – home of the hockey Canadians – and our famous Underground City. We are only one block from the Metro, the city's fast, clean subway system that can whisk you anywhere that is too far to walk, from the Casino on Ile Notre Dame to the boutiques and restaurants of the famous Plateau Mont-Royal.
• Montreal is a city of festivals and our location gives easy access, either on foot or by Metro, to the venues of all of our great festivals. Whether you come to our city for jazz, comedy, the Fringe Festival or les Nuits d'Afrique, you will be close enough to walk, but far enough away to relax and sleep in quiet and comfort.
