Get to know Gracias (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Gracias.

Gracias, Honduras, is a small, Colonial town in the west of Honduras and is easily accessible from both San Pedro Sula in the north and Tegucigalpa in the east. There are a variety of Gracias, Honduras hotels from which to choose, however, a limited number of Gracias, Honduras hostels have set up here. Prices are aimed a little higher than the Honduran average, given the town is a common weekend retreat for locals.

Given the small size of the town, it is very easy to walk around to the local attractions, but if you are feeling lazy, cheap moto taxis are also available. For a good view, you can walk up the hill to the San Cristobal Fort (El Castillo de San Cristobal). Depending on the day, entrance may be free but, if not it is still very cheap to visit. There is a small display in the main building and some old canons and sculptures to look at outside.

In the Plaza de San Sebastian, visitors can enjoy a combination pass to experience a small museum, botanical garden, and the San Sebastian church. Entry is fairly cheap and the attraction is a nice, quiet place to explore or to just relax. There are another three churches in town you can visit (San Marcos, La Merced, and Santa Lucia) however, they don’t regularly open, so it may only be possible to take pictures from the outside of the buildings.

If you’re looking for a very relaxing activity during your stay, you can head out to the nearby hot springs (Arcilaca or Termas del Rio) which are always lovely after a day or more of traveling. Both locations are set in a natural environment with modern facilities available. To get there, you will need to take a moto taxi -- just be sure to negotiate a price before heading out.

While Gracias isn’t a regular destination for foreign tourists or backpackers, the chance to soak in some hot, natural springs should be reason enough to visit here. You will have a choice of hotels ranging in budget and fewer choices for hostels in Gracias, Honduras, but it’s worth a stop for a night when you’re visiting Honduras. Some Gracias, Honduras hostels may also fall under the category of "posada," so be sure to check them out in case they have what you are looking for.
