Bhagsunag Waterfall

Bhagsu Nag

Just down the Bhagsu Road from Mcleodganj is the village of Bhagsu Nag with it’s ancient temple, cool clear fresh water springs, and nearby Bhagsu Waterfall.

From the temple, its just a short walk along the path to the waterfall. Some enjoy the opportunity of a cool brisk dip in the waters around the falls.

The area around Bhagsunath is also famous for its many hillside deposits of slate and its former slate mines, closed since 1995.

Dharamkot

The village of Dharamkot is about a 20-25 minute walk up the somewhat steep TIPA Road from the bus stand in Mcleod Ganj. By taxi or rickshaw, it will take between 5 and 10 minutes. You can also reach Dharamkot by a pleasant shady footpath from Bhagsu, along the way meeting friendly Tibetans and local villagers.

Dharamkot has long been a favorite picnic spot with its sweeping view of the Kangra Valley, the Dhauladhar Mountains, and the thick deodar and pine forests.

At the end of TIPA Road in the dense forests of Dharamkot, above Mcleod Ganj, is the Tushita Meditation Center, a center for the study and practice of Tibetan Mahayana Buddhism.

If you enjoy a somewhat longer (and rocky) walk, you can continue on from Dharamkot to the village of Naddi, known for its spectacular views of the Dhauladhar Mountains.

The Peaceful Forests of Dharamkot

Naddi

The beautiful village of Naddi is located in the hills above Mcleod Ganj, and can be reached by road from Mcleodganj and lower Dharamsala, or on foot from Dharamkot.

In addition to the sweeping view of the beautiful Dhauladhar Mountains, Naddi is just a short walk to Dal Lake and the Tibetan Children's Village. An International school is nearby, and the ancient temple of Ganni Mata will soon be linked to Naddi via scenic ropeway. You can walk to Ganni Mata Temple and the beautiful nearby waterfall in about an hour, and avoid the crowds of Bhagsunag.

Tibetan Medicine

One man has traveled to Dharamsala for more than 10 years to see Tibetan physician, Dr. Yeshi Dhonden, after being given 3 weeks to live by his western doctors.

As more and more people become aware of the effectiveness of Tibetan Medicine, they visit Tibetan physicians who are now established in many countries around the world.

Those who have the opportunity, come to Dharamsala to visit Dr. Dhonden's Clinic, the Dr. Lobsang Dolma Khangsar Memorial Clinic, and Men-Tsee-Khang (the Tibetan Medical and Astrological Institute, TMAI) and its branch clinics.

Visiting a Tibetan Doctor

If you wish to see Dr. Dhonden or another Tibetan physician, it is best to avoid spicy foods, coffee, black tea, and alcohol the night before. Then the first thing to do in the morning, is get a sample of the first urine. Next go to the clinic between 6:00 AM and 10:00 AM and pick up a number to obtain your place in line. Depending on your number, go back to the clinic between 9:30 AM and 2:30 PM, Monday through Saturday. Keep in mind that on especially busy days, the numbers may be all gone by 7:00 AM. The clinic closes for lunch around noon time for about 30 minutes, and is closed on Sunday.

Diagnosis

The doctor, or "amchi," will observe the patient, observe the quality of the urine, read the 12 pulses which act as messenger between doctor and patient, and ask questions to discover as much as possible about the patient's current medical condition.

Treatment

The patient may receive advice regarding diet and lifestyle, an external treatment, and/or a prescription for Tibetan herbal medicine to be taken three to four times a day.

If you'll be staying in Dharamsala for a while, you'll return to the clinic once a week for follow up visits. When you're ready to leave, you'll most likely receive a two month supply of Tibetan Medicinal Herbs to take with you, then you can order additional supplies to be mailed to you as needed.

The Roots of Tibetan Medicine

The roots of Tibetan Medicine run deep in Tibetan culture and are the result of thousands of years of development and integration of the major medical systems of the ancient world. Tibetans have created a unique holistic system drawing on and blending the medical traditions of Tibet with those of India, China, Persia, and Greece (much as western medicine has its roots in the Arabic, Greek, and Persian traditions).

The Tibetan Medical system is at once a science, art, and philosophy, acknowledging needs of the individual as a whole, encompassing body, mind and spirit.

The science of this Traditional Tibetan System is grounded in a wealth of knowledge and understanding of anatomy, physiology, embryology, and pathology. It has developed a complete system of diagnosis and treatment, an extensive herbal pharmacopoeia, and a vast body of medical literature, including its volumes on Tibetan Psychiatry, the oldest surviving and complete written system of medical psychiatry.

Over time, as the effectiveness of Tibetan medicine became known throughout central Asia, Tibet became known as the “country of medicine” and the “land of medicine plants.”
