Get to know Phoenix (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Phoenix.

Phoenix is a great place to start exploring the natural beauty of the Sonoran Desert. Phoenix is the capital of Arizona and is located east of Los Angeles, California. Arizona State University adds a youthful atmosphere to the city, with an enrollment of more than seventy thousand students, making it the largest public university in the United States. The city also has a large Hispanic population and is known for great Mexican food!

There are few hostels in Phoenix, so don’t just assume you’ll be able to find a place to stay. Make sure you contact a hostel in Phoenix before you arrive. Things to do are spread out over a large metropolitan area, so if you’re not driving, the Valley Metro provides bus service throughout Phoenix. You can explore the trails on foot or on horseback. There are gorgeous hiking trails at Camelback Mountain, the pueblo ruins at Pueblo Grande, and Phoenix Mountain Preserve. Several stables provide opportunities for horseback riding. For something different, you can take a hot-air balloon ride over the city. Phoenix is also a popular place to begin a Grand Canyon tour.

Like in Las Vegas, during the summer season, you can enjoy a poolside party at local bars and hotels. The best nightlife area is downtown in neighboring Scottsdale, which has been compared to South Beach, Florida. There you’ll find posh cocktail lounges and lavish nightclubs filled with hip young crowds. The Downtown Trolley can take you around the area. Just make sure you don’t get dehydrated on your way back from partying, because the temperatures in the area are often over a hundred degrees.
