"Milford Sound Lodge is really the only budget accommodation in this area, and understandably rather popular. Book ahead if you're hoping to use it as a base at the end of the Milford Track or some other hiking/activity. The Location This lodge is one of the best places to base to access Milford Sound --the mountains rise up from right around it. We were lucky and had great weather the whole time we were in Te Anau and Milford Sound. We were able to see the mountains, and it was something very special to be in the Tasman Sea looking back at the west coast of New Zealand. If you can stay overnight in Milford Sound, do it. I felt like we didn't have enough time there. I have to say the bus driver was great, stopping at all sorts of spots we would never have found on our own, and dragging us up tracks to see special places. By the time we got back to Te Anau, I wanted to start all over again. — Marianne

Don't miss out on the beautiful day boat trip here. But it rains here something like 300 days a year so go prepared. — Clare
