"Furneaux Lodge, in Marlborough Sound, is only accessible by foot along the Queen Charlotte Track, or by boat (water taxi). The lodge itself is quite nice, with a good restaurant and full bar (a rarity in the sounds). However, backpackers are clearly second class citizens here, and are relegated to The Croft, a old stone building away from the main lodge. Upon entering, one is struck by the dampness and mustiness of the building, which is festooned with old couches, old beds, and a few bunks.
