A lot of travelers get into Nairobi as a starting point for a Kenyan wildlife safari (which most commonly happens around the Masai Mara reservation), but you shouldn't overlook all the things you can do within the city itself. For instance, if safaris are your thing but you do not have the budget or time to make it to the Masai Mara, head to the Central Nairobi Park in town, where you'll be able to see most of the famous African creatures. To complete the experience, head to the Maasai Market, where you can see and shop typical tribal handicrafts, just like you would on a proper safari, far away from Nairobi.
Nairobi has a great nightlife and restaurant scene. Considering the discrepancies of income between the local population, some bars, restaurants, and clubs are clearly oriented toward higher income Kenyans (as are some of the malls), as well as expats and visitors. Ask at your Nairobi hostel for recommendations of places you can go to hang out with locals if you want to enjoy "the real deal." As local residents, the staff of your Nairobi hostel would know best!
There is a great variety of accommodation options in the city, ranging from backpackers hostels with dorms and privates, to inns and even set-ups to look like camping areas (with permanent, pimped-out tents), but including some comforts such as full bathrooms or AC. When the weather is good, the latter option can be a lot of fun!
