"Sets a new standard in excellence - Incredible. The design and layout of this place is great. It's like an Ikea showroom. The whole place is spotlessly clean. There's a large comfortable common area, roof terrace or excellent bar to hangout out in. All alcoholic drinks at the bar cost 390 yen -- cheap by Japanese standards. "Excellent value for money - At 1200 Yen if you bring your sleeping bag (2200 if you want a mattress) hard to beat on price. Dont expect anything in "gaijin"-size though. The three showers on the ground floor are so narrow that its difficult to turn around in if you are 1,80 m. "Would never go near this place again - Terrible, moody owner who gets pissy and passive aggressive when people break "rules" he never actually explains. Sh*tty shower and toilet arrangements. Thin, uncomfortable bed and cold rooms. Curfew at night at 11:00 and you have to leave in the morning by 10:00. "Utano is by far one of the best youth hostels in Japan. I traveled from one end of the country to the other visiting many hostels and I always compared them to Kyoto's Utano Youth Hostel. The staff are friendly, the atmosphere is laid back, and the food is great. "Nice and Homey - This place brings back some of my funniest and most enjoyable memories from my worldwide travels. It has a quaint eccentric feel to it. I found the staff friendly and helpful. "Great Place and Location - We stayed here for four nights when we were in Kyoto. The map they give you is a little difficult, we got a bit lost but I think it was our fault. The hostel is on a side street which is a one-lane and looks a bit like an alley. "The location of this hostel cannot be beat. It is blocks away from Kizomizu temple, Pontocho street, the river, and Gion. The staff is very friendly. I liked the free internet and the bicycle rentals (500 yen/day!). Kyoto is great for biking, so this made a big difference for me.
