Get to know Memphis (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Memphis.

Commonly known as the home to blues and soul music, Memphis has a lot to offer in class and culture. Of the most popular things that are a must-see in Memphis is Graceland, the home of the King, Elvis Presley. The house has an eclectic nature to it and gives you a real feel for who he was as a person and his family life. You can also pay your respects to his grave site on the grounds.

Elvis and many other of the music pioneers of their time spent their days recording at Sun Studios. The place is still running today and is a popular place to visit to go and see some of the old records and learn about the people who recorded there.

Memphis also has a strong history of civil rights -- Martin Luther King, Jr., spent a lot of time here fighting for the rights of the African American people of the United States. He was assassinated at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis; this has been converted into a Civil Rights Museum dedicated to the cause that he and so many others fought for.

On a lighter note, and for the evening's play time, Beale Street is where it is at. Head on down and listen to some of the fabulous blues, R&B, and soul music that they have going on in venues every night of the week. While you are at it, for dinner, find yourself some of the famous ribs for which Memphis is known. It is a treat that everybody should have when in Memphis.

Hostels in Memphis are scattered throughout the place. Some are close to downtown and all of the action, others are a bit further out and you will need a car to get around. It is best to do your research before you get here about how to get around, to ensure that you are staying in a safe neighbourhood, as some of them can be on the rough side.
