"Hostels -- worked for us! - I got stranded in ak when a volcano prevented airlines from leaving. I was low on funds and found this hostel. I was very impressed with how nice and helpful the staff was. They sent someone to the airport to pick my roommate and I up. I was traveling with thirty pounds of fish and they found room in their freezer to store it for me. This place is within walking distance to all kinds of stuff. "Had a great time - I stayed here in May 2009. The staff were fantastic. A nice relaxed place and met lots of people from different countries. The fact they supplied coffee, tea and breakfast was a bonus. The rooms were basic but clean. There was only one shower for the dorm rooms which was a bit of a nuisance. "Great value for the money - I stayed here for several months. The place was great. The room was comfortable with an awesome flat screen tv and a nice sized refrigerator. They had free high speed internet. Even though it was inexpensive relative to other places it was still very clean, quiet, and secure. I liked that the rooms are private and have key card entrances. "Worked well for me - I've stayed here three times, and while it's far from my favorite hostel, I sure wouldn't deter someone from considering staying here. I found the bedroom adequate, plenty of storage space in well stocked kitchen, most of all you can't beat the location for getting around. The main transit station is a block away. My one gripe is that they lock the women's floor, so any time you want to go to your room during accessible hours, you have to get one of the employees to go up and unlock the outer door. Anchorage hotels tend to double in price on June 1; however the off-season before then and after the US Labor Day weekend can be cold and many attractions don't gear up until June. Fun bike paths and moose in town. B&Bs can be a happy medium between the $$$ hotels and some of the less attractive hostels (~$80 in '05), For rest of state, Denali fills up early so plan ahead for that park if you can. Backcountry camping is usually available. If you bus to Denali, the train back is fun. McCarthy/St. Elias is uncrowded; more difficult to get to w/o a car. Small boat day tour to glaciers in Seward is recommended and easy to get too and a night there is fun. — Canoer
