Get to know Shanghai (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Shanghai.

Skyline of Pudong financial district, across the river from Downtown Shanghai.

Shanghai is one of the most visited cities in China and is a seaport on the East China Sea. It is divided into 18 suburbs, whereof nine are located in the central region (Puxi).

A couple of the places you can stay in if you are looking for a hostel in Shanghai are Huangpu, the historic center of the city and Xuhui which offers lots of hip shopping and lifestyle spots. Generally speaking, you can expect Shanghai hostels to be clean and safe with friendly staff to help you in every situation.

If arriving by plane you will probably arrive at Shanghai Pudong airport. To get to the city center, take the legendary high-speed maglev train which reaches a speed of 430 km/hour. Getting to and from your hostel in Shanghai is also no problem since the city is served by a modern and comprehensive public transport system. If you get lost and ask somebody for directions, be aware that most people will think it is impolite to tell you they do not know either. Instead, they might lead you the wrong way just to give you an answer.

While you are there, enjoy some of the numerous cultural activities such as exploring the Shanghai Museum or the Museum of Art and History, attending a performance of a classic Chinese opera, or discovering the mixture of Chinese and modern architecture. You can also go shopping on Nanjing Road, discover up-and-coming Chinese artists at Moganshan Art District and join the vibrant nightlife in the hip district Xintiandi. After all that you'll be ready for a good night's rest at your Shanghai hostel.
