Get to know Hallein (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Hallein.

Hallein is the second-largest town in the Austrian state of Salzburg and the capital of the Hallein District. Located around ten kilometers south of the city of Salzburg, not far from the border with Germany, this small historic city is a home to just a little over twenty thousand people.

Although often overshadowed by the ciy of Salzburg and its world-famous sights, Hallein has a few impressive attractions of its own. Most known is without a doubt the Salt Mine or Salzwelten Hallein, located in the nearby village of Bad Dürrnberg. It is considered one of the oldest and the largest mine open to the public in the world. After your visit of the mine, you can explore the region's history further by checking out Celtic Village in Dürrnberg, Celtic Museum in Hallein, and the Silent Night Museum in Hallein -- you can visit all of these for free with the Salzwelten ticket. It's good to know that if you want to visit the city by train, the national railway system of Austria (ÖBB) offers a special ticket, which besides the Salzwelten ticket also includes round back trip to Hallein, as well as the shuttle bus to the mine and back.

Another thing for which Hallein is relatively well known is the oldest brewery in the state of Salzburg and the oldest wheat brewery in Austria, the Höfbrau Kaltenhausen. Beside the main products, it is famous for offering exceptional seasonal types of beer. The place can be easily reached by bus, so it is definitely a must-visit spot for beer lovers.

Your chances of getting an inexpensive room are slim, as the choices for Hallein hostels are scarce. Perhaps the best way to a cheaper stay is to look for a hostel in the city of Salzburg and take a train to visit Hallein -- the two towns are no more than fifteen minutes' drive apart.
