Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Jämtland

Jämtland is a province in central Sweden which covers an area of 34,000 square kilometers (over 21,000 square miles). It is the country’s second largest province, yet its population is only about 113,000. Consequently, the population density is very low. Most of the population resides in the province’s only city, Östersund, and its environs, which is also a great area to look for hostels.

Founded in 1786, Östersund is not only the sole city of the province, but also the regional capital of Jämtland County. UNESCO has named it one of the Creative Cities of Gastronomy, so tourists are sure to enjoy delightful meals during their travels throughout the province.

While there are plenty of hostels dispersed throughout Jämtland, the majority of these accommodations are located in Östersund. These highly-rated, median-priced hostels tend to offer clean beds and facilities, organized kitchen areas, quiet surroundings, as well as extras such as buffet breakfasts or saunas on site.

Once visitors have settled into a hostel of their choice, they can look forward to a diverse selection of activities, including skiing and other snow sports in the winter as well as canoeing, hiking, fishing, and biking in the summer. There are also twelve old Sami villages to visit and explore.

July is the warmest month of the year in this region, also offering some of the longest days to take advantage of all Jämtland has to offer. At this time of year, the sun sets around 10 pm and already rises again around 2 am, so there are plenty of daylight hours to pursue as much sightseeing as the heart desires.

To begin, you can fly into the Åre Östersund Airport. If you will be staying in a hostel in or around Östersund, you might enjoy a visit to Jamtli. It is an open-air museum depicting the rich history of the region through visual displays and interactive plays. Wear a comfortable pair of walking shoes because there is a lot of ground to cover. You can even look for souvenirs in the crafts shop or take a coffee break in one of the cafes. A complimentary English audio guide will help you find your way around.

Once you have exhausted your feet, you will have plenty of time to enjoy a delicious dinner in a restaurant and make your way back to your hotel before the late sunset. You might even relish in a quick dip in your hostel’s sauna before retiring to your bed in anticipation to the next day’s eventful sightseeing excursion.
