Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Loch Ness

Famous for the water monster rumored to be prowling the depths of its lake, Loch Ness is a beautiful and isolated location in the midst of the Scottish Highlands. Dramatic mountain peaks rise up on either side of the loch, which is one of the largest and deepest lochs in Scotland. Many of the hostels in Loch Ness are close to the lake itself, but not so close to any shops. Buses run from Inverness down to Fort Augustus, and then on to Fort William, which makes it convenient to reach the hostels and points along the lake and any shops by public transportation.

There are many points of interest in the area. Stop by the visitor center in Drumnadrochit to learn more about the history of the Loch Ness Monster (also nicknamed "Nessie") or visit Urquhart Castle, which overlooks the stunning waters of the lake. If you have time for it, take a Jacobite cruise along the lake to learn more about the history of the lands and the people, as well as the monster. Weather permitting, take a stroll through the magical forests and glens in Glen Affric. Keep an eye out for waterfalls!

The nearest city is Inverness, which is a central transportation hub in the Highlands and the location of many hostels. There is regular public transportation service from Inverness to Edinburgh, Glasgow, and the larger towns in the Highlands. It is also a central shopping point, with plenty of stores and services. There aren't too many pubs in Loch Ness. There are a few in Drumnadrochit and many in Inverness, but otherwise don't expect to see much nightlife! Loch Ness is the perfect quiet and remote getaway from city noise without having to journey too deep into the Highlands.
