Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Minnesota

Minnesota, USA, is located in the northern part of the midwestern United States of America. This is a great state for hostel enthusiasts to enjoy nature, especially the water features. Many people call Minnesota the "Land of Ten Thousand Lakes" due to its numerous clear blue lakes (although there aren't exactly ten thousand lakes). Like other northern states, Minnesota typically experiences cold winters, with lots of ice and snow; this is balanced out by pleasant summers. Although the snowy weather may make it unfeasible for those without experience in winter road conditions to drive, Minnesota is relatively flat, making it easier to drive the rest of the year.

Unless you drive to Minnesota from Canada, it's easiest to enter through part of the southern border, from Iowa, Wisconsin, or the Dakotas. A lot of southern Minnesota is farmland. Minnesota, USA Hostels are limited in the southernmost part of the state, but you can find a place to stay in a city such as Preston.

A little further north will bring you to the central hub of Minnesota. Known as the Twin Cities, Saint Paul and Minneapolis make up the only metropolitan part of the state. More than half of Minnesota's residents live here! This is probably the only area of Minnesota where you won't need your own car, because the bus and railways service will be sufficient for all of your needs. Saint Paul is the location of the Minnesota State Capitol, but Minneapolis is a better place to find hostels in Minnesota, USA. The Mall of America is the most popular attraction in this area and the entire state. This is the largest mall in the United States of America with a huge selection of shops and even an amusement park inside.

If you head further north, you will exchange the urban area for the wilderness. Quite a bit of this area is state or national forest. Several state parks are nestled in this area, such Lake Itasca State Park, which offers its own Minnesota, USA hostel. Other state parks in the north woods don't have hostels, but you can look into their camping or lodging options, which may also be affordable.

This is an ideal state to go through to visit the Great Lakes region or head north to Canada. Minnesota is out of the way for most travelers, but those who do take the time for a Minnesota road trip will be impressed!
