Most Hostel Pula

The Location

The newly renovated Most Hostel is nestled in the heart of Pula, and conveniently located near the open market, cyber cafes, bars, and restaurants. Allow a fifteen- to twenty-five-minute walk from the main bus and railway stations. Head towards the amphitheatre (the locals call it Arena) and follow Istraska Street all the way to Dobrilina Street. Turn left, walk a hundred metres and turn right into Radiceva Street. The walk is a safe and enjoyable experience. It is interesting to note that most locals know directions of landmarks and not streets.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The hostel owner understands the needs of well-traveled backpackers, so the hostel is well laid out in a quiet location. Dorms are clean, spacious, and secure. Air-con and heating is available. The bunk beds are freshly made with foam pillows, matching linens, and duvets and towels. The mattresses are comfortable but very springy. Each bed comes with a little shelf, a reading lamp, and hangers. There are in-room safety deposit boxes with keys for each guest, plus keys for the front door and building. Bathrooms with toilets are well-maintained, although there are a lack of hooks and shelves to keep your things dry. The showers are piping hot and the water pressure is excellent.

Common Spaces

More like stepping into someone's living room than a hostel, the roomy common room is decked out with a plush couch, magazines, a flat screen television with cable, one computer terminal with free internet and Wi-Fi. There is no balcony or terrace to gracefully walk out and breathe in the fresh Istrian air -- it is an apartment block. Next to the common room is a clean little kitchen with no microwave oven, but there is a stove, coffee maker, sandwich toaster, and fridge. There are plenty of pots, pans, mugs, and cutlery to hold a dinner party on the cute wooden dining table and stools. Breakfast is not included, but there is tea, coffee, and a solitary cornflakes box.

Summary

Overall, it is hard to describe the atmosphere at Most Hostel Pula while there were only the two of us at the time. There was no sign of management and no phone numbers -- only a couple of people who seem to "know" the owner. Our stay was just after Easter, so summer will be an interesting time to see how the hostel operates in its prime location. Pula is a lovely city to soak up history and cafe culture and be part of the relaxed lifestyle.
