Anandamayi House Reviews

Anandamayi Hostel & Hotel. is like an oasis of calm in the midst of the hustle of the big city.

The Location

Located in the center of the old town area of Bogotá, in a complex of historical villas and gardens, Anandamayi is beautiful and quiet and old fashioned. It is beautifully decorated, from the courtyard gardens to bathrooms and to the big kitchen with its historic equipment still seemingly in place.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms circumvent the gardens with several bathrooms scattered between. And there is a huge dorm in the center. The number of beds in this central dorm might be too many for some travelers; in that case, they are encouraged to choose one of the many smaller and pricier rooms. During our stay, the old and extremely uncomfortable beds in this dorm were being replaced by newer, more modern ones. But the hostel chooses to cover them with thick plastic, which exudes a very strong, unpleasant, plastic smell. In time, this may be reduced.

Common Spaces

The best feature of this hostel is the common spaces, rather than the comfort of its dormitory. It is not like those newer, flashier hostels with more modern comforts, but it does have charm and character, not to mention tasteful design. The hostel has not one but three gardens, around which all the rooms, bathrooms, and administrative areas are positioned. The buildings are heritage-level old, and among these buildings, the one in the center, the kitchen, comes first in its authentic historic taste. It is both kitchen and dining area in fact, and it's where the complimentary breakfast is served. And at other times, guests can cook their own meals. Some of the equipment the the ancient stove in the middle doubtless are remnants of a previous era.

Summary

With its admirable location in the city's Old Town area; its charming, beautifully preserved, historical buildings; and a quiet, oasis-like atmosphere throughout, Anandamayi is a worthy choice among the Colombian capital's army of hostels. There may be cheaper hostels, or hostels with more of the modern comforts, and hostels located in areas with better nightlife. But if what you are looking for is calm and quiet, and a healthy dose of well-designed and authentic character, Anandamayi Hostel & Hotel. is the one to choose.
