Informe de Hostelz.com
Note: This hostel was previously called "Highlander Backpackers". It is now under new management.

This hostel is reasonably well located for seeing the sites. It's a 15 to 20 minute walk from the Royal Mile and the main tourist sites, but busses are just a block away.

The hostel has a bit of a run down feel to it but the it is clean. The interior could use a coat of paint to spruce things up. The beds in the dorms are quite lumpy and the doors are hard to close securely. There is a very nice and large community room with lots of seating and a TV. The kitchen is nice and modern and has both indoor and outdoor seating. The kitchen and sitting room get quite crowded in the evening. There is a small laundry room available. It's piled high with hostel laundry and quite cramped, but the machines work. The toilets are clean, but could use some sprucing up, and the toilet paper tends to run low more often than not. The showers vary tremendously from one to the next. The best showers are co-ed and the doors don't lock so you get both men and women walking in to check if one is available while you're trying to get dressed. They are a bit short of showers too. The single showers with locks have water temperature that varies so extremely they are almost unusable.

The hostel seems to try and attract long-term residents, for example students, and that makes for a different atmosphere than a hostel just for travelers. The long-termers have their own clique and don't have much interest in chatting with travelers. Overall it's a bit short on comfort but manageable for a couple of nights.

Arrgggghhhhh!
I was unlucky enough to stay here for a few months two years ago and still have nightmares! The place was not only dirty (I mean filthy) but dangerous! Wires and electrical sockets were loose. The showers were in some weird unlocked corner, meaning that anyone could (and would) walk in, the toilets stank, and the management frequently decided customers hadn't paid, meaning you return and find your luggage has been secured until you repay another weeks rent. My tip -- always get a receipt! The reason I stayed here? It's surprisingly cheap but for some unknown reason appears to be under the impression it can charge five-star hotel prices during festival!

Not bad
More of a semi-refuge/backpackers hostel than a plain hostel, has quite a lot of Polish/other immigrant, long termers, as well as your come and go backpackers. I am from England and must wonder what International backpackers must make of English hostels, as very often they become, as i said, last resorts for immigrants, which isn't a bad thing, its just that when i was over in Australia backpacking about it was like five-star hostels i was staying in, with your high attitude in crowd populating each. anyway, kitchen is always jam packed -- got pretty unbearably dirty at times. There is a good TV room, and a nice cosy tiny backyard for smoking in or BBQ'ing in. The beds and dorms are fine and tidy. And the staff seemed nice enough. Overall it was the cheapest hostel in edinburgh and perfectly livable in for about one week max, after that, due to its size and attitude of long termers, you would really have to go into a Lord of the Flies survival adaptation mode to last much longer in it.

I have stayed at hostels across the world -- Asia, Middle East, Europe -- this is the worst hostel I (and my travelling companions) have ever been to. The place was filthy, toilets weren't cleaned for two days until we asked for them to be cleaned, there was no toilet paper, the sheets had stains on them and were revolting, the people running the hostel were the same ones partying until three a.m. with teenage girls -- right next to the sign that said please keep noise down after twelve p.m.! It was a shambles, there was no accountability, the two guys who were supposed to be running it were too busy picking up teenage girls to clean or show any responsibility. It was totally overpriced during festival weekend, and I'll be telling everyone (and every website) I can find not to stay here. Revolting and should be struck off the hostel list -- nothing about it is worth enduring this minging hovel. Our room stank and hadn't been cleaned after the last people left -- with their rubbish still lying around the room. A good example of where the system falls down -- you can't have people running the hostel in return for their rent -- they don't give a damn! We nicknamed this hostel "The Sess Pit" -- it was horrible to return to and made us feel unclean and unsafe at nights. There was also no point trying to get any sleep because the teenage occupants run rampant at all hours of the night -- underage drinking and squealing their hearts out. this place is a joke.

This Hostel is absolutely disgusting. I was not expecting anything flash but at least a clean place to sleep and shower! This was not the case though. On arrival our rooms were not ready and even when we were given our keys the sheets and towels were not ready, eventually we were given sheets and my friend was given a hand towel to use for her stay. The room itself looked like it had not been vacuumed or cleaned in weeks with rubbish and grot everywhere. The bathrooms were so unhygenic with hair, i almost preferred not to shower at all. The upstairs bathroom in particular smelt like a dodgy drain/mens urinal! There no safety deposit boxes for valuables and nowhere to keep luggage. We paid 25 pounds per night to sleep in a eight-bed dorm, i think for that price they can afford to pay a cleaner at least! I have stayed in many hostels all over the world and have never been so disapointed and shocked at the state of a place. Edinburgh is a beautiful and entertaining city, at least it was only the slum of a hostel "Travellers Inn" that was a disappointment.

I was supposed to stay at this hostel for a week and having stayed at numerous hostels around the world I wasn't concerned at a bt of peeling paint in reception. Once I had paid my fee and shown to my room it became clear that this hostel is in need of a bulldozer. The room was absolutely filthy and I had to be moved to another room as it turned out I was in the staff room. The second room wasn't much better -- ants everywhere and the shower was so filthy/black so you couldn't see the once white tiles. The fire escapes were open all night so there was no security whatsoever. In summary don't stay there. The one star I gave it was just for ratings sake and the health and fire departments need to give this building a major look at.

Just arrived. The place stinks like a communal swimming pool. There's a moldy apple under my bed and lists of rules everywhere. Still, for £10 a night in Edinburgh....?

Good: Wonderful staff; good common room with satellite TV and a kitchen; nice location; and ok beds and rooms. Bad: No security--the door to our room didn't even close; while we were there, parts of the hostel were under construction; weird office hours; and the worst shower in Europe, period! Summary: Sad to say, but try someplace else. While the staff here are great and there are some good points, there are better options elsewhere in Edinburgh.

A good and friendly hostel. It's a bit old, though it's really cozy. It has good facilities for cooking, only they could use some more showers (three for 60 people is not enough). I had a great time, and met loads of new people from all over the world.

I found that I did not like this hostel for a number of reasons. The people who stay here are generally between 18 and 22 years old, and are mostly long-termers, so they are all close and very cliquey. They make no effort to hang out with "outsiders." The room I stayed in had four beds, all squished horribly into a tiny room, and the heat was wonky, so it was unbearably hot. In the common room people could smoke, which sucks if you are a non-smoker. Again, since the clientele is generally 18 to 22, they are all trying to be cool so they all smoke. I remember seeing wafts of smoke filling the air. The TV was nice, as was the kitchen, but everything else was poor.

This hostel is the most cosy in Edinburgh and is welcoming to everyone. There are always lots of friendly people staying and working in Edinburgh here as well as just passing through and visiting this beautiful city. You must stay here, the staff are sensational and so is the location. Lots of supermarkets and cafes nearby and even a blender in the excellent sociable kitchen (for all your banana smoothy requirements)!

The hostel is small, friendly and clean. The staff are great and the rates are the best in Edinburgh. It is also out of the way during the festival which is great if you want a bit of peace (as we all do from time to time). I would definitely recommend it!
