Informe de Hostelz.com
This hostel is family-owned in downtown Budapest. Across the street is Nyugati train station making it superbly situatied. The TV/Internet room (one internet terminal) makeshifts for a bedroom as well. Internet is cheap and cable TV is provided. Cold drinks are also available.

The rooms are in residential ground where neighbors can be fussy of loud noise. Depending on the room you get, the self-service kitchen can be a bit crowded. There is usually a line for the free breakfast served in the mornings so it may be important to be one of the first few in if needing to catch a train.

"The Crew" is well versed in English and although a bit timid, can be a enormously helpful if needing recommendations of what to do in Budapest and the surrounding areas. Budapest is a large area to explore so it helps they are open 24 hours, cheap, and a feeling of safety via an extra key needed just to get in the complex.

Dirty, no staff, even dangerous.
First day. The owner explains us all the strict rules for the hostel as if we were fifteen-year-old children. Ok, we understand that because hostel is located in a common-private building. But then we realize that everything is dirty ("everything" means one shower and two bathrooms, half-broken), except for the kitchen, which is clean thanks to the guests of the hostel. Breakfast? What breakfast? We have some pieces of strange meal in the kitchen, nobody preparing us nothing, nobody cleaning, no staff member even staying more than an hour in the hostel for three nights and days. Oh, and the gas installation of the building is kind of special. In fact, we (not the "staff") decided to close the gas for the hostel on the second day because of the heavy and suspicious smell, so no more hot water or heat for us. One more thing -- at the second night, we were twenty-five people for twenty-two beds. The owners overbooked. Incredible. Don't make the mistake I did -- never come to Yellow Submarine Hostel.

Do not even consider to go to this hostel! Unfortunately, I only found this website with all its negative (and completely true) comments after returning back home. The rooms are overbooked, they give the key to your individual room to other people as well, the ratio of people to bathroom is more than poor, linen looks as if never changed, you might well be bitten by bedbugs, they only bring breakfast to all their exterior apartments if they think it's not too much hassle, and if they bring it, it has the look and feel of well-rotten-down cardboard. Budapest is a wonderful city, so don't diminish the joy of your stay with booking in this rotten place!

This place sucks big time! The owner is a asshole! The sheets were dirty! The security is a total laugh! The bathrooms and toilets are very dirty! The hostel is always overbooked! My advice, do not ever go to the yellow submarine!

This was an excellent hostel! It was cheap, but it had a huge suite with a bathroom in the rooms, plus free breakfast. Everything was clean and the staff was friendly. Dining was great the next morning because it has a fairly small kitchen so you get to meet all of the other travelers the next morning. I would totally stay here again.

I really liked this hostel a lot. It wasn't too big, was in a great location for seeing the city and going out at night, and had a really cool atmosphere. It attracted a really cool group of people from all over Europe and the world and we all hung out together in the kitchen and around town. It wasn't filthy and most of the staff was quite nice. The only complaints I would make are that they started charging for internet halfway through my stay (unlike what the ad said), didn't accept credit cards (unlike what the ad said) and the reception was not available twenty-four hours (unlike what the ad said). Once you're checked in it's amazing, but be sure to arrive before midnight. I would definitely return to this hostel and if you're not crazy and asocial, I think you should too.

this hostel was seriously gross. i have just returned from a several-week backpacking trip and have stayed in many hostels, and most were nice or at least decent. this is the only hostel i have felt compelled to review, because it was really dirty and not worth the price (even though i had some weird massive apartment to myself). when i arrived after being on a delayed train all damn day and feeling my way in pitch dark through a nasty entryway full of dumpsters and up three flights of stairs, the guy at the desk said i was lucky he was still there because you can't check in after midnight. not only did it not say that anywhere on their website or confirmation email as far as i remembered, but they even had a brochure sitting right there that said "twenty-four-hour reception." then, he couldn't find my reservation for a while, even though i had all the information from the online booking and email right there on a printout. when he finally did find it (i had booked a single room), he said i was lucky they didn't give away my room because i hadn't checked in earlier. i was like, that's kind of interesting because i already paid for the room. yeah. this is the only hostel i have been to that charges the full cost of your reservation to your credit card at the time you make your reservation, rather then just holding the details for when you check in. and then has the gall to not even bother to keep track of it. and, it wasn't even cheap. so the room they ended up giving me, i guess the only one still empty, was this massive apartment thing with three beds. which was kind of cool until i realized how filthy it was. the bathroom had the reek of rotting urine with a hint of a superficial spraying of lysol. and there are definitely bedbugs of some variety. or perhaps multiple varieties. i knew something was up. i assumed i was just getting bitten by mosquitos from walking around outside and whatnot, but -- i have a lot of bites. some are not even healed yet and it's been a week. anyway, the other travelers there were nice and seemed fun, but i am sure they got duped into this nasty hole from the cute website or some hostel list in the same way as i did. but this hostel is just so unacceptable. it might be a good place to go if you are a gutter punk who lives in a squat. or a homeless person. otherwise, i recommend you do not support this BS.

This hostel SUUUUUUCKS!!! It's a real dumpster dive, and whoever wrote all those overblown five star reviews must be related to the owner, because the only thing cool about this place is the name... The breakfast DOES NOT include hot dogs or eggs or anything else warm and nourishing, it could possibly include fried bed bugs though, as there seems to be plenty of those around... In the spirit of not sounding like a total whiner, the location is central, but that's about the only advantage of this hostel over others... The bathrooms are filthy and the shower doors do not close, so prepare for your genitals to be exposed to the world in all their glory... Also, the most tourist scams vis a vie strip clubs or bars (per the US Embassy) to be found in Budapest are conveniently located right down Vaci Utca, right out the front door... Save yourself the trouble, don't stay here...

Firstly the guy who runs the hostel is extremely rude and really quite aggressive (will scream at guests, slams doors/anything he is holding, threatens that no one will get breakfast if there is one dirty plate left in the sink). The level of security is low and the general vibe is crap. I really would not recommend this place, mainly because of the owner and his attitude towards paying guests.

This place is, unfortunately, a sh*t hole. The staff were relatively friendly but that can only make so much of a difference. The whole place was falling apart, the sheets were paper thin and about 20 years old, it was cramped, crowded, smelly, loud, etc, etc. People were sent all over to find their rooms, to get to ours we had to go outside and down an ally, some people had to take a shuttle to get wherever the hell they were going. Oh, and yes, I got bitten by bed bugs all night. Like any hostel you can still have a good time if you meet the right people, but you might as well have a clean place to sleep while you do it. Here's my advice to the good staff at the yellow submarine if they happen to read this: -Buy new sheets that actually cover the beds. (And real pillows.) -Only book rooms/beds that you actually have and warn the customer if they will have to be taking a bus elsewhere. -Fix the lights in the entrance so it's not so scary when you arrive late at night. -Put numbers on the beds so people know where to sleep. -Attach the 'lockers' to the wall so they could plausibly protect your things. -When something breaks/runs out/is dirty, fix it/replace it/clean it. I know this might cost a little money and time, but for 10 Euros a head you should be able to afford it, and if you don't make these types of changes soon you're going to find your chances of repeat business in serious danger. The breakfast was in fact good and copious. It was the perfect thing to help a hangover.

The hostel was great. I met so many lovely people from all over the world. If you want a nice friendly place where you feel safe and want to meet people, this is the place for you. Me and my friend Rose were travelling by ourselves and we felt so safe here. We didn't expect too much, but the dorms were clean and there was hot running water. It's near to shops, the market and right opposite the trams.
