Hababusch Hostel is run by students who live in the building. The building dates from the 18th century and it certainly shows, but it feels as though it dates from East German times rather than the 1700s.

It is easy to get to - walk down the hill from the station. And it is ridiculously cheap (only 鈧10/night). There is a 10鈧 key deposit, and it can be difficult to awaken somebody to get your money back if you are checking out before 11am.

The place is falling apart, but it it has a friendly atmosphere in the shared living area and kitchen. The showers are memorable and there are numerous signs in Russian harking back to times before the fall of the Berlin Wall. The downstairs door is locked, but the door to the dorm is always unlocked and may give rise to concerns about the security of leaving your belongings in the room.

Weimar is a lovely place and the hostel is situated near the main attractions. It appears to be the German equivalent of Stratford upon Avon, with museums dedicated to Goethe, Liszt, and Schiller. On a sunny day it is worth walking along the river from the Goether river-house to the castle.

5 Unique, Clean, Friendly
I spend my first night in Weimar in Hababusch Hostel when I moved from Liverpool to Weimar with my girlfriend. Im so happy that we spent our first night because it made arriving so easy for its such a beautiful hostel. You can feel it's run with love and care and the interesting little quirky things used for their interior design enhance the ultimate creative air that surrounds this quite magical Hostel in Weimar. Booking was easy, quick and all other logistics were also handled easily. A great to place to stay when youre in Weimar!

5 This hostel certainly belongs in the quirky category -- and it's a matter of taste if one likes such places. I do -- and this is one of the best hostels of this type I've been to. Right in the centre -- and that's important if you want to immerse yourself in the Weimar ambient -- and very cheap. The rooms and the kitchen are basic, the showers even more so, but what Hababusch is about is the arty atmosphere and the living room with piano, large dining table, and this amazing chandelier where everybody meets in the evenings. One thing -- the individual rooms indeed don't have any locks, which might be slightly concerning if you're traveling with something valuable. I've never heard of anything being stolen in Hababusch, though.

5 Mellow atmosphere, centrally located, quiet (with the exception of the garbarge trucks in the morning, which since I don't have an alarm clock and I prefer to walk around in the morning), and internet (cheaper than in town). Beautiful ivy facade, kitchen, no curfew, and comfortable beds. This hostel ranks near the top for me.

4 The hostel is cleaned daily. The building is old and it shows. But there is no problem with that. That's were the atmosphere comes in. I am told that this hostel is run by students as a non-profit organisation. So it can not be compared with a commercial hostel. There is no reception. The students that live upstairs do the check-in. There is a touch of communal living and anyone who enjoys that will feel very much at home in this place.

1 We stayed at this hostel in Dec. 2004 as part of a school trip and were really disappointed. The place is very cheap and it shows. One of the beds broke and the bathrooms were disgusting!! The building itself was lovely and quaint but we just couldn't get past how dirty the place was. Weimar itself was my favorite place in Germany, but the hostel was our least favorite. PS. They have a sign up asking people to write to Lonely Planet to get them to include the hostel in their book.

5 This hostel is a very old house in the historic center of this charming small city. The house has obviously not been modernized to the latest standards but that only enhances the atmosphere of the place! It has a very cozy and warm atmosphere, and the hostel is run by the students who live upstairs in the same house. The guests are part of the family. Weimar is impressive. It's a city that, as a whole, seems to preserve its history. There is not much that will disturb you in strolling back in time through parks, past castles and other cultural and historic places. Friedrich Nietzsche, J. S. Bach and Martin Luther lived in this city, as well as dozens of other "celebrities" in the field of music, philosophy, architecture, literature and art. The Buchenwald concentration camp is point of interest nearby.

5 The Hababusch is really one-of-a-kind. It's nice to have a place that just feels like you're going back to your own apartment at night: there's no curfew and you can go about your own daily plans. The people that work there are truly exceptional, they are very kind and willing to help when you are in a pinch (I should know 鈥 I had to turn a four-day stay into a three-week stay when my rent contract for my apartment was late!). The hostel is cheap enough that I recommend getting a small room (if you book ahead of time) so you have plenty of space to put bags.

5 The Hababusch Hostel is great. It's a little kitschy, but it's got lots of character and the help there is great. Get to know Kai, he's a wealth of information. He taught us the ins and outs of Weimar. I've been here for almost three weeks and its gonna be sad leaving. Weimar is a beautiful city with tons of culture. Just watch out for "no money Sundays."

4 The best hostel I have seen in a long time, if you are not too picky. It's right in the historic centre, very cheap, and obviously run by students, i.e. not professionals. Weimar is the most wonderful place to relax if you enjoy old buildings, parks and scenery. It can also be recommended for its cafes, young art galleries and student life.
