Garbage, trash, disgusting, nasty
This place was horrible. Overpriced, bathrooms are filthy, rooms are so tiny, no locks on room doors, beds are bunkers, staff were nasty and probably a bunch of immigrants who are in the country illegally. The breakfast special is a joke. My first time in New York and I get this garbage experience? How can these people run this place that is so filthy!

Perfect for backpackers
This place is perfect for young people willing to spend few days in New York City. Great location, just next to Times Square, at a walking distance of everything that is interesting in Manhattan. Clean. Cheap. Safe. I definitely recommend it and I'll definitely go back there when coming back to New York. This is a japanese B&B with very friendly people. If you're asking for a clean, cheap bed in NYC in a safe location, this is the place to be. I met other friendly international people there, I spent good time in NYC, and my trip was awesome. Thank you Times Square Hostel.

You get what you pay for and also a few other treats
when i think of time square hostel i firstly think of their own description on the web and then i generally pause and smile. I stayed here for six nights. some of my fondest memories are the dead mouse in the doorway; the free towels -- a tiny towel; the electric shock one received upon opening the front door; the somewhat strange oriental smell from the restaurant downstairs; the gentleman from china who managed the establishment who constantly said ''it's ok;" the time he fixed our door, with masking tape; the shower -- flip flops were a God Send; the cockroaches in the so called kitchen; the fact that some rooms we seen were divided with a bath sheet to make two rooms. If you're not picky about where you stay and if you're going to be out most of the day this is good value for money. i returned to new york the following year and i did not stay here.

Disgusting
We traveled around the United States for four weeks and this was definitely the most horrible and disgusting hostel we've stayed in. The bathroom looks like a crime scene! Never seen a bathroom so dirty in my whole life. The rooms don't have doors, so you can't lock your room and they are very small.

Both locations are very convenient, near Times Square. The only concern I had was that I was put in a coed dorm without being told in advance. For many people this probably wouldn't make a difference, but some people might be uncomfortable finding out they are in a mixed dorm without being told or given the option.

If you will be out past 2 a.m., you will have to pay a $5 non-refundable fee in order to be able to get back into the hostel. There are at least two locations. One on Forty-eighth street and one on Forty-third street. The Forty-third street location has a kitchen, but there are no utensils at all. There is a refrigerator and a microwave oven. The gas stove works, but it is unclear if you are allowed to cook. I overheard one of the staff say that you can't. I don't know what the kitchen situation is at the Forty-eighth street location. There are lockers approximately 1 foot x 1 foot x 2.5 feet. It costs a quarter to lock things up. Computers at the Forty-eighth street location only. Perhaps you can walk there and use the computers even if you are staying at the Forty-third street location. I don't know. You pay to use the internet. Price not too bad. One free print out per day. Around December 2006 they're doing remodeling on the Forty-eighth street location.

Okey start with a positive it was close to time square! After that, the beds were as hard as rock and very short, the room was tiny with no room to put your suitcases! There were no locks on any of the doors or lockers, strangers could sneak in up to your room because friends of ours who weren't staying there got past on their own and up to our room. The kitchen, was tiny and full of rubbish so you couldn't actually get in and the fridge didn't work! The bathroom -- stinking! Dirty! Mildew! Big black hairs blocking the plughole! The mat was so damp and squidgy i dread to think about it! To top it all off, we found a mouse in our room the next morning. Needless to stay we checked out immediately and found another hostel which was alot nicer with actual facilities and was cheaper!

The managers of this hostel are very friendly, even if they don't speak good English. And the place is extremely close to Times Square -- just a few blocks away -- and is located near a number of good places to eat. Other sites, like Central Park, are within walking distance. Linens, pillows, and towels are clean and included in the price of the room. The bathroom situation is bad. It's somewhat dirty -- more mildew in the shower than anything else -- and there is only one per floor. Also, the beds are some of the most uncomfortable I've ever encountered, more like bare box springs than anything else. There are no locks on the door, but a manager is there twenty-four/seven -- which may make you uncomfortable because he sleeps on the couch in the lobby. I have also learned from unfortunate personal experience that the microwave malfunctions -- a bag of popcorn sort of caught on fire after only being in there half the recommended time. The price sure is right, though.

Great location -- literally one block away from times square. Unfortunetly that's where the good comments end. The man at the front desk did not speak much english. They did not respond to us knocking on the door. The man led us up to our room which was at the end of a smelly hall with hardly any doors. Most of the rooms were just corners with shower curtains as a door. The room we stayed in was very small with uncomfortable child bunk beds. The matress on the bottom bunk was extremely hard. it may have been more comfortable to sleep on the floor. Under the matress was multiple pornographic magazines. The bathroom was exteremely wet and dirty. There were paper bags drenched on the floor. The kitchen/laundry room was extremely small and crowded. the floor was very sticky. In the morning, a random man unlocked our door and came into our room. He proceeded to stare at us until we asked him what he wanted. He panicked and quickly left. We checked out as early as we could. All in all, it was a terrible experience but we are sick people and would definitely return.

I stayed here right over New Years for a bit over a week. The location is really good, literally a block or so from Times Square and a block from a subway station. The guys at reception were quite friendly, though their English isn't that great. There's also not much security (the doors are unlocked and no lockers), but there's always someone at the door checking people who come in. The beds are pretty clean, and though not spacious, the rooms are cozy. There's one bathroom to share per floor, so best to wake up early in the mornings to avoid waiting. The bathroom was decently clean, but the shower is not always hot. Great prices as well, and its location made getting around the Big Apple really easy.

okay, undeniably, the place is really close to times square but that's already the best thing one can say about this place. i was there in october last year. i had booked online but when i checked in they had never gotten any reservation. i was told that online booking did not work sometimes which really cheered me up a lot! about the hostel: somebody else already said that all they did was pack a house in nyc with as many beds as possible. I AGREE. some of the rooms are not even real rooms and you sleep behind curtains while people keep walking in and out. the bathroom was the most disgusting place i have ever seen in my whole life and i'm not a spoiled little brat. seriously, i was standing in the shower and the names of all sexually transmitted diseases i've ever heard of came to my mind. i guess that the bathroom, a tiny little room, was used by about 15 to 20 people. the floor was a lake, there was hair and other gross disgusting stuff everywhere and i don't think it was cleaned once while i was there. Admittedly, the place is cheap and the location is great but i definitely cannot recommend it.
