The Location

The hostel is walking distance from the train station and most major tourist attractions. It isn't in a very pretty or trendy neighborhood, but it is quiet and safe, and five minutes from the Anton Martin subway station. Tucked away on a side street, the area can be tricky to navigate, but the hostel provides clear directions and a map.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms are organized around a central outdoor courtyard. They are small and sparsely decorated, but clean. Most have four to eight beds, though a few double rooms are available. All guests are given a magnetic watch for a door lock, which is a pain to use and may take a few tries to figure out. Bathrooms are public restroom style, with mens' and womens' rooms containing toilet stalls and locker stalls.

Common Spaces

The common area is Mad Hostel's best feature. Colorful and fun, it contains a bar, pool table, TV, and four computers with free and fast internet. There is also a small but fully stocked kitchen. At night, the common room is packed with students looking to party in Madrid. Weary travelers beware -- this may not be the best place to call it an early night.

Summary

Mad Hostel is a clean, social hostel in a good location. The open-air layout of the rooms offers a unique atmosphere, and the relaxed setting ensures that visitors meet other backpackers from around the world. Staff members could be friendlier, and the booking system isn't very well-organized, but most problems seem to be quickly resolved.

Nightmare!
Size of their rooms is outrageous! They're more like cages than rooms to be honest. Size of their beds no better! Even a hobbit would feel trapped. In general -- really claustrophobic! Wouldn't recommend it to anyone!

Good hostel, very nice
This hostel was quite nice, didnt have any real problems with it. It has a rooftop terrace, a "bar," which is really more of a rec room with a beer vending machine, and free internet access. It is located really close to "Tirso de Molina" metro stop, within walking distance of Sol Square. The only minor problem I had were that the guy working the desk did not speak English and did not really want to attempt to understand my trying to speak Spanish. He would have rather had me wait awhile until staff came in that spoke English. It wasn't as if I were demanding he speak English. Also, he made it a big point to convince me that the area outside the hostel was not safe after dark, but it's like most inner-city neighborhoods -- if you mind your own business you'll be fine. The worst thing that happened to me in Madrid after dark was that a hooker tried soliciting me, and that didnt happen anywhere near the hostel. Oh, and the showers suck. They are timed to go off after about fifteen seconds, so you continuously have to push in the faucet to continue showering. The free breakfast wasnt self serve, some guy waits on you. So be warned if you are used to making a pig out of yourself. But other than that it was great and safe! Would recommend!

This is a decent choice in a quiet neighbourhood near the old city centre of Madrid. It is clean with a lot of communal space and a rooftop terrace. There is also a workout centre with machines (which is pretty unique for a hostel) and free computers and Wi-Fi. The rooms are very small and it's a tight squeeze for one person and one piece of luggage in the elevator, but it's a good choice.

the hostel is ok. But the kitchen is very little and too slow! and no glasses, no dishes, and a long time to cook because there's like a camping gas kitchen.
