USA Hostels was born in San Diego and it has a proud reputation of being the city's number one hostel (even if it might be self-titled). It has everything you'd expect from a large city hostel and more. And the crowd is a little more mature than the beach hostels.
The hostel is situated in a renovated Victorian building right in the heart of San Diego's busy Gaslight downtown district. The building is packed with facilities, including a party room where you can buy cheap beer and vodka, internet cafe, TV room with beds, storage rooms, and a massive (spotless) modern bathroom. Dorm rooms are artistically designed and very funky, with either four or six beds per room.
If you're looking party you'll find the party room more than sufficient to start or end your evening and strike up conversations with fellow backpackers. But it's not the only attraction at this hostel and if you need some quiet time than you'll be satisfied. The hostel is big enough to accommodate whatever you're after without getting impersonal.
USA Hostels pride themselves on cleanliness and they set the standards very high. Every day you'll see someone vacuuming the rooms and hallways -- even private rooms are serviced and cleaned every day. Bathroom and common areas are designed for backpackers and not the normal mishmash of a house-cum-hostel.
Free wifi internet is available with the access code and a free breakfast is offered (do it yourself pancakes of waffles). Coffee and tea is available all day the kitchen is similarly well designed and well stocked. There are activities daily (Mexico, pub, or zoo trips) and regular cheap in-house dinner options. The location is awesome and close to everything in San Diego. The only hassle is parking, which is not available and doesn't come cheap. Street parking is also available (if you can find it) for free between 6 p.m. and 8 a.m.
