Informe de Hostelz.com
The Venice Beach Cotel is the perfect location to stay on the beach in L.A.. Venice Beach is a very hippie place with lots of boutiques, artists, musicians, and craftsmen selling stuff. If you like the bohemian ambiance, you will be served

The Location

The Venice Beach Cotel is quite far from the Greyhound bus station. You will have to take two different buses to get there. It is easier to access if you are coming from the airport. However, the location of the hostel in itself is perfect! It is directly next to the beach and has a cafe that serves margaritas. There is a bus at the corner of the street that will get you to UCLA. But if you plan on visiting L.A., it is definitely better to have a car, as this city is really huge.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Each dorms sleeps four people. Some dorms have their own private bathroom but most use a shared common shower and toilet. There are also private rooms available. You need to bring your own towel/soap.

Common Spaces

There is a cafe in the hostel where other backpackers can meet. This is definitely a social place where everyone speaks about their experience. At night, the cafe turns into a bring-your-own-beer bar with people there to chat. They offer free coffee, free games, and there are free books to read. Wi-Fi internet is not free, though. But you can also go in the cafe just below the hostel to get free internet.

Summary

This hostel is really perfect if you want to stay on Venice Beach while you are in L.A.. It is decently priced for the location and you will meet plenty of other friendly backpackers.

Good location, bad vibes
I definitely will not be staying at this hostel again. On arrival I was pretty happy because it's a room right on the beach for like $25/night, bathrooms are nicer than usual for a hostel, and half the beds were single (not bunk) so not as crowded as some places. As it turned out though, the problems with this place were way bigger than any of the good stuff. First, it was freezing at night (this was December). Then I got a bunch of itchy bites that I can only assume were bedbugs. Then the hostel staff stole my camera! I left it in the common room, somebody turned it into the desk -- confirmed by the guy who received it -- but by the time I went to ask for it, it was gone. I talked to every manager I could find, but nobody did anything. I said that I would drop the issue if they would just refund the cost of my stay (three nights), but they weren't even willing to do that. I think it's a pretty screwed up when the staff obviously steals your stuff and the management takes zero responsibility for it. There are too many bad hostels out there that think they can take advantage of budget travelers, and this is definitely one of them. My advice -- pick a different one!

Unfriendly
the whole building is just dirty. when you come in you smell some funky air, it is stuffy inside the whole building. there was a thermometer that said it was about 82 F in the hallway, no AC available anywhere. well we did have an ocean view, but that was the only good thing about the room, it was tiny and the bathtub was way too dirty. the reception didnt seem to be friendly or helpful at all, gave us the impression that they didnt really wanna deal with the people. i surely wouldnt stay there again.

Poor hostel, great location
We stayed in this hostel for three days, and it was "ok." Compared to other hostels, this one is worn down. Our room was very damp and warm, and smelled really bad. The staff was quite friendly, nothing to say about that. I won't recommend this for anything else than the spot-on location.

Very, very dirty
Dirty is all I can say. I didn't expect a three-star rating but that dirty. carpet gross, my sink was all rusty, and a big hole from rust. bathroom clean, and nice location but so dirty I couldn't stay there. so is another person that check out the next morning.

Rude and unhelpful staff
The staff here (with the exception of one lady) were very rude and completely unreliable when it came to asking for information on the local area. The English guy especially couldn't care less about helping us. Also, there was no towel service and as a result we had to buy some. The room is tiny and very claustrophobic. We also had a resident cockroach! The hostel however does have a great location, it's just a shame the place itself is rubbish!

Ok but way too far from the action
I stayed in this Hostel for two nights in Early March. It's perfectly fine, relatively clean. Fairly quiet, they say that the lounge turns into a Bring Your Own Beer bar at night, but I never saw that happening. The Internet connections are on each floor which is great and they check your name and room number at the door. The lockers in each room are hugely noisy, especially if someone is arriving late. The windows rattle (I had friends in other rooms, all their windows rattled as well to the point of distraction) and the noise from the street is pretty loud, even from the third floor. The main problem is the location. It's a one-and-a-half-hour bus ride to Union Station then another half hour train to get to central L.A.. If you just want to stay in Venice then that's fine but if you want to actually see L.A., pick somewhere else. Venice is pretty seedy -- unless you are with a group I wouldn't stay here, I'd go stay somewhere in Santa Monica, which is much safer. The number of times we had people approach us as we waited at the door of the hostel was just creepy.

Traveler friendly, excellently run hostel
I stayed here for a couple of nights before and after my trip to Mexico to make connecting flights. I had no intention of making Venice Beach a tourist stop but merely it met my logistical needs. The bathrooms are brand new and extremely clean. Kerry, the manager, runs a super fantastic hostel. I felt very safe at the hostel. They have a buzz in system and a camera at the door to make sure only guests who have the right to be there are. I was very ill during my last stay as a result of an iced coffee purchased from a local coffee shop and the manager permitted me to stay in the same room and actually let me have it as a single and didn't charge me. She was also very kind as is all the staff. This is a must stay if you find yourself in the Venice Beach area.

Excellent
i stayed ten days in the cotel, very good location on the beach. The staff are very friendly, open twenty-four/seven. The rooms are basic but cleaned every two days. It is a hostel -- not a hotel.

Muy Bien
I stayed in the hostel a few times already, and I think it is great. The building itself is old, but they keep the rooms clean, the staff is very friendly, and the location can't be better. That's all you need from a hostel, and if you are a real traveler, you know what I am talking about. My favorites are the manager from Israel and the receptionist from Wales. They make everything just perfect!

Delivers what it promises
I was looking for somewhere basic, cheap, and close to the beach, yet close to L.A. too. The Venice Beach Cotel was perfect. I paid extra for the room with a bathroom and didn't regret it. The room was clean and neat. Extremely basic, which is exactly what I needed to chill out. Staff were great. They say the only way to see L.A. is by car. Wrong. Buy the $3 all day pass for the metro system, a car map for Central L.A., and get chauffeured anywhere for basically free. And then spend the rest of the time on the beach. Make sure if you're here, you also visit the restaurants at the foot of the pier just south of Venice Beach. They're a step up from those in Venice Beach itself, although the all day discount deal with the cafe across the road is nice. Enjoy your stay!

Ok
When i was in los angeles i lived at this hostel and found it to be well run, well located, and a bit noisy. Kerry is great a manager. the beach is beautiful and the people fantastic in and around venice, but try to avoid rooms one and two if you are needing a lot of sleep.

Focus!
Focus people -- it's clean, the money is ok, the best location on the beach, and the manager is very connected. put your bags in the room and go have fun -- there's lots of places around.

Great Location
The Cotel was a great place for me to stay! The price is right and I really enjoyed the beach life. The reception desk is open twenty-four hours and they were extremely helpful to me. The manager Kerry, she was so cool and helpful as well. In general things were clean and orderly, they are currently remodeling much of the building but I hardly noticed the construction because the staff was so great. When I return next summer I will stay here.

We stayed here in April and the location was great in the middle of the Venice Beach Boardwalk where we had a few restaurants to choose for breakfast even though they had coffee in the morning. The staff and manager are very friendly -- they always greeted us when we walked in. I heard that they are doing some renovations and hopefully we could come back and rates will not go up.
