Vamhaz Hostel

Love, love, love this place
best location in the city. close to everything, very clean, and the snacks were addictive. fun staff, comfy bed (thankfully not a bunk), very clean and hot shower. the only downside was the crawl up the staircase (but the view from the window was beautiful). I'd gladly return here again and again.

The only thing that stops this place getting the fifth star are the stairs and that damned creaky bed (i ended up pulling the mattress onto the floor every night). Otherwise it is the best hostel I've stayed in -- fantastic chilled atmosphere, a common room with a door you can shut (free net, dvds, books on budapest), clean bathrooms, and lovely, lovely staff. Go now before the strata management board shuts them down! And be quiet on the stairs!

i studied in Hungary this autumn and i have to say that the Vamhaz was much more my home than the the student accommodation i had in Gyor. the staff here made me feel so welcome. i wasnt able to spend nearly as much time as i would have like in budapest but the few occasions i got there the guys there made my time. definitely the place to stay -- this place seems to attract a really chilled crowd and i met loads of great people. the only downside is getting your self of the couch and out into the city. things can be a bit too comfortable. sloths and hedonists beware -- this place is a quagmire of comfort. oh yeah and the stairs are a killer but its worth it. make sure you take the staff up on the coffee -- it's to die for.

This was a great hostel. It was quite hidden, but when we climbed up the long staircase, we were surprised when we entered. This was quaint and little, well lit, and highlighted by soft tones that was pleasing to the senses. People gathered in the center room and laid around on the couch and chairs in a totally relaxing atmosphere. This was a great place to meet people and just hang out. Breakfast is included, free coffee, tea, linen, and almost everything and it only cost us $10 euro a night. We would highly recommend this hostel. Budapest is a very nice and different city, but you won't have a problem because everyone speaks english, including the staff at the Vamhaz.

We had an odd stay at Vamhaz that was very expensive (for what it was) and disappointing as ratings have been high. We arrived on time (a late flight, so it was after 11 p.m.) and were greeted by a lovely girl who told us we'd been upgraded from a double room to an apartment not far away. Not knowing better we totted along to the apartment. We should have said a flat no and demanded what we booked. The apartment would be good for five people, not two and aside from the pillows smaller than what you get on an airline and a mattress of the thinnest foam, the huge window overlooking the bed and it faced the morning sun. Would not be a problem if there were curtains but no, at 5:30 a.m. every day we were greeted by the sun glaring in. Bathroom was poor also. We also felt that we had the whole hostel atmosphere taken from us by being put away from it all. Unbeknownst to us we were there during Szeged, a huge music festival with awesome acts. We were not in the hostel to hear from other travellers -- we would have gone out to it in an instant had we known. No, we got to sit in a huge apartment with dusty old furniture wondering how early we have to go to bed in order to get some sleep before the sun came up. Refuse the apartment if you want a hostel. Otherwise book a hotel -- it is cheaper.

I loved this place. Creamy coffees in the morning and great staff. Super super friendly.
