Locanda Poste Vecie is actually a couple of rooms with six beds in a larger hotel. Despite this, it doesn't at all feel like an afterthought! Locanda Poste Viece is comfortable, accessible, clean, and in the heart of things.
The Location
The hostel is north of the Ponte di Rialto just beyond the Pescaria (fish market) on Campo della Pescaria. It is one of the few (only in our last estimation) hostels that is in Venice proper and does not require a boat trip to San Marco. It is in a wonderfully central location to all the main attractions. It is tucked away in a tight alley, but this cuts down on foot traffic noise and the hostel's website's directions are easy to follow and very accurate.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorm room is actually two rooms that are divided by an open doorway and there are three beds in each room. Best of all, none are bunk beds! The outer room is preferable as it has windows, but both are very clean and nice. There are no lockers but the security into the hotel\hostel area is quite good. You are given a key to the building where the shared rooms and dorms are, a door down from reception, as well as the dorm room itself so there is no lockout or curfew. The outer door opens onto a courtyard which is empty, but would be a good place for a smoke. The dorm is on the fourth floor. The bathrooms are spotless and cleaned daily and you are provided with a towel and soap.
Common Spaces
On the third floor there is a room with two leather couches and a TV, though it is right outside a private room and quiet hours start at 10 p.m. Overall, this is not a very social hostel but definitely a nice place to come back to after a long day. There is also a small kitchen on the fourth floor but it is not yet operational and the owner was unclear about when that might be a possibility so you may want to call ahead of time to make sure.
Summary
Though this may not be the top pick for people looking for a rowdy hostel experience, Locanda Poste Viece is clean, in a prime location, has friendly staff (including the very friendly owner), and it is easy to come and go. It is among the best priced for such a central area and an excellent option for those not looking to spend money on an extra ferry trip to San Marco!
