Sandanzas is a wonderful hostel. It is small (26 beds) and has a fantastic atmosphere. One of the main reasons for this is the staff. The hostel is owned and run by a collective of five young Argentinean travelers, all of whom are very friendly, helpful, and speak English.
The hostel has only been open a couple of years and the rooms and bathrooms are modern and clean. There is 24 hour hot water. There are a few communal dorm rooms as well as private rooms for couples. The reception is open 24 hours and there is no curfew (VERY important for a stay in Buenos Aires!). Sandanzas also provides one of the best free breakfasts I've encountered in a hostel - all the pastries and fruit you can eat plus fresh orange juice, tea, and coffee. Other facilities include a kitchen, lockers, TV room (with video player), free internet (one computer), a hammock, laundry service, and bikes that are free to use.
Sandanzas emphasizes the cultural side of travel and hosts a number of activities. These include tango lessons (professional dance instructors come to the hostel once a week - you have to pay a small fee to join in the lesson) as well as folk concerts and other performances. The staff can also organize private tango or Spanish lessons.
Since the hostel is small and has comfortable communal spaces, there is plenty of opportunity to meet other travelers, some of whom will likely be staying in Buenos Aires for some time - studying Spanish or working on university papers about Argentina.
The hostel is situated in San Telmo, one of Buenos Aires' most interesting neighborhoods. It is close to a number of bus stops or about a 15 minute walk from the nearest metro stop.
