Fat Salmon Backpacker's Hostel

Fat Salmon Backpackers is a progressive, fun and funky space that provides inexpensive accommodation for budget international travellers. The Fat Salmon offers its guests plenty of room in which to relax, being equipped with two large communal lounge areas, one full sit-in kitchen, a reception area and an outdoor deck overlooking the Alberni Inlet. We like to use the deck to host big BBQs on balmy evenings, watching the sun set itself down. There are both shower and toilet blocks for your comfort and necessity, as well as "La Gorda's Suite" - a relaxing single-person bathroom, boasting a large bathtub for the weary after-a-long-day(s)-of-tramping traveller. All of the single-sex dormitories are shared rooms, and range in size from four beds to twelve beds per room. We try our best to accommodate groups together in a given area of the hostel, and this is usually not a drama. There is a laundry service provided on site, available for a modest fee. We also have a sweet parking space in the back of the building where you can park your car, van, bus, motorcycle, bike, or camel - whatever you came in on.

The Fat Salmon, in all its infinite wisdom, understands the need for a secure space in which to keep passports, money belts, credit cards, cameras, and any other small important articles. Therefore, we provide a locked safe space, free of charge, for this purpose. We also have a secure lock-up space on premise in which you can leave packs, bikes, and any other big gear for a minimum fee, for longer periods of time, should you plan to hike the West Coast Trail or take a Batstar tour. We, and your gear, will be here when you return.

Please also note that the Fat Salmon is an international hostel and, as such, offers accommodation to people travelling to, from and through Port Alberni. We require a passport as ID when you check-in. Failure to provide this will result in failure to check into the Fat Salmon.
