Dom Studencki Zaczek is attached to Krakow's Jagiellonian University and is full of students who also stay there. It is too far to walk from the main Krakow railway station, but bus 152 and tram 15 go straight from the railway station to just outside the door.
It is on the outskirts of central Krakow -- only a 15 minute walk to Rynek Glowny, the main square, and is situated in the huge Blonia fields. There is not much to see or do between Zaczek and the old town so it can get a little tedious walking home each night but there is a student bar there called Klub Studencki Zaczek where you can get a cheap breakfast in the morning or listen to live music on weekend evenings. It is always full of friendly residents and other locals, more than keen to test out their English language skills on you so it's a good way to get some suggestions on what to do in Krakow.
The rooms are student dorms so they are showing their age and there are a lot of them. Although fortunately they are not as old as Jagiellonian University (the second oldest in Europe), they are still relics of the communist era.
Zaczek can get a little rowdy on weekends but otherwise the facilities are fairly decent for what you are paying for them. A towel and linen are provided, but the towel is very small. And the bed linen, whilst clean, is small and does not fit the "bed" properly so it's probably just as easy to bring your own. The showers are very communal but kept clean – and there is always plenty of hot water.
