4 Big hostel, safe place, close to airport/metro/bus
Although not in the old city center, the Lisbon HI Hostel is pretty conveniently located about midway between airport and the Alfama, Lisbon oldest district. Airport buses run to the hostel (stop, Picoas, fifteen minutes) and there's a metro station thirty meters away from the hostel (Picoas, Amarela line). The hostel is within walking distance from the Marques de Pombal square, where all the sightseeing buses depart from and arrive. It's a big hostel and I found it a little difficult to make new friends here, but the beds are comfortable and with the extensive breakfast it's pretty good value for money (though with 17 euros/night for a dorm bed in summer, it's one of the most expensive of the Portuguese hostels). The hostel is open twenty-four hours a day and you get a personal access card for your room, in contrast to most Portuguese HI hostels where you share a single key for one dorm. There are big lockers (bring own padlock) for you luggage, and the dorms are pretty spacious. There are laundry facilities and a bar where you can eat your own meal, but no kitchen facilities to prepare anything. All in all it feels like a safe and comfortable place to stay, and if you don't mind the ten-minute metro ride to the city center it's an excellent base to explore the fantastic city of Lisbon.

3 This youth hostel is a bit outside the city centre. However, Picoas subway station is just 50m away and there are also several buses serving this area. The rooms have 2-6 beds, and it seems that they have 'boy' and 'girl' floors. I stayed there with my girlfriend and we got a 2-bed room, but usually it is segregated and there aren't boys'/girls' showers/toilets on every floor. The rooms are clean and simple, with bunk-beds, and they have lockers though they don't seem to be very save to me. Big luggage lockers are also available and they cost €1,5 per day. Internet is €1 per 20 minutes. The staff are friendly enough and they speak English very well. There's also a grungy common room but I never saw anybody there. The hostel is open for 24 hours, though you can't go to your rooms between 10 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. Breakfast is included in the price. Everybody gets: 1 hot and 1 cold drink, 1 bowl of cereals or 1 egg or 1 joghurt, 2 rolls, 1 slice of ham or cheese, 1 butter, 1 marmelade. The staff in the kitchen really make sure you don't take anything more! Lunch and dinner are also available, but there's also a supermarket right around the corner. There's also a bar that is quite cheap, but when I stayed there in summer there weren't many people there. Overal this is a reasonable hotel.
