This hostel is extremely difficult to locate and asking for directions may not help. But if you have a map or a reasonable idea where it is, and you like beachfront beauty and tranquility, then definitely go here. A cheaper stay on a beach is near impossible to come by in Europe.
From Cais Do Sodre train station in central Lisboa take the train to Oeiras station, get out on the south (beach) side and take the leftmost path. You'll pass a sandwich stand on your left. Keep going up a little hill and when you get to an auto roundabout next to a freeway underpass, go left under the underpass then look immediately right and find the gateway to the Inatel compound. Go straight through the compound and near the end, to the left (along the beach) you'll see the hostel entrance. It's a 15 minute walk from the train, which is a 20 minute ride to central Lisboa. The last night train from Lisboa leaves at 1:30 am.
Once you're there the only problem is the 11-4 lockout, but this is the same in all HI hostels in Portugal. So if you get there early then leave your bags, have a snack and snooze on the beach. They have a nice little bar with cheap snacks and beer, and good-sized pizzas for 5 euro. There's also a very good members' kitchen in back.
All the rooms are very nice although a little small, with clean comfy beds and some with ocean views. There isn't a curfew, and the staff will help you with any minor problems you may have. Breakfast is good and is served in a nice airy dining room - or you can take it out onto the terrace patio. All in all, an excellent and very inexpensive hostel. If the Lisbon city center hostel is booked then stay here.
