Bleak
Stayed Jan. '08, no atmosphere, god awful service, unhelpful staff, and boxlike rooms with questionable hygiene. Only has a fridge and microwave in kitchen. Don't go there.

Do you want to experience the claustrophobic, smelly conditions of prison? How about an obnoxious manager that mumbles through the check-in process? Wish I had found out about this website before my arrival in Australia! Anyway, the rest of you have been warned!

Do not stay here. It is dirty, cold, and smelly. The people who live there are all thirty-five plus and seem to have some serious mental issues. The staff is so rude and unhelpful too.

Stayed here for a week in 2005 and would not recommend it, though it was cheap! I paid in full in advance and then the managers told me "no, no, you have not paid yet" (and of course they hadn't sent me a receipt...). Sorted it out, but overall the atmosphere was a bit bleak and my sheets were smelly! Location was cool, right near the QV markets.

I booked into this hostel over the phone when I was in Melbourne last year. I was shown the room I would be staying in when I went to pick up the key and drop off my stuff. It was a complete tip [mess]. The other residents were all long-termers, there was rubbish all over the bunk I was supposed to be sleeping on, and food was being cooked in the dorm (with a gas stove and a wok set up permanently, it looked like). I left without staying, and had a really hard time finding another place on such short notice!

This is a pretty poor place. The rooms are tiny and being in them is like being in an oven because they're so hot. The kitchens are big but have zero equipment so it's rather hard to cook. And the management are the most miserable hostel managers I've come across. Their slightly bizarre approach to cutlery/plates, etc., (pay a $10 deposit to hire a set of plates and cutlery that you then have to keep in your room) is symptomatic of their approach, which yields precisely zero atmosphere. It feels more like a morgue! With good management the place could be good but at the moment just don't go there.
