Glenbrittle Youth Hostel

Tucked away at the base of the southern Cuillin Ridge, this small hostel aspires to a 'rustic' character. Fortunately for travellers, the measures taken to promote that style don't get in the way of it being a very liveable hostel.

The owners, Colin and Niki, are the only staff; they keep to themselves, but are very friendly, and if you hang around into the late morning you might catch a glimpse of that baby you heard crying last night. Facilities at Glenbrittle include a decent sized kitchen and a dining room that seats about twenty; itss not bad in the off season, but during late spring and summer if the hostel is fully booked, it's conceivable that finding room to eat could be a challenge. There's also a comfortable sitting room, and a large drying room in an outbuilding which is a real plus when you come down from the hills at the end of the day as wet as if you'd just jumped into a lake with all your clothes and gear.

There is one male dorm, one female dorm, and two rooms which can be rented out by groups for mixed use. Everything about the place was well-kept and clean. On the unprepared side? Rent maps and guidebooks from reception for a 拢5 deposit and 50p per day. The downside of the location is that the nearest shops are in Portree, about thirty minutes away, with the exception of the campsite store half a mile down the road, where you can buy milk and a small variety of other groceries.
