The Dun Flodigarry hostel is situated on the North Western side of the Isle of Skye in a rather remote area. Most tourists are in the region for a day trip, being attracted to the site of the nearby Quirang -- a picturesque view of oddly-shaped rock formations. The hostel's location gives you the feeling that you are getting away from it all and can spend your day relaxing looking out at the spectacular ocean view -- that is, until the tour groups turn up. Being a large hostel with at least eight dorm rooms and some doubles and twins, it caters for overnight stops for backpacker tours.
The large kitchen also accommodates the tour groups with many hot plates and sinks. It is a little unorganised but eventually all the necessary utensils can be found. There are many tables and chairs in the main common room, with a small lounge separate. The bathrooms may be a problem at full capacity. The showers seem to be new and have good pressure and temperature -- quite clean until a busload of backpackers want to shower. Most of the building has had a fresh coat of paint in a variety of colours that brighten up the place. The rooms on the ocean side have fantastic views of the sea, islands, and cliffs. The other side has a quiet countryside view. There are some tables outside to look at the view also.
There aren't many facilities in the immediate area so it is best to bring food to cook in the hostel's kitchen. The nearby pub apparently doesn't want people from the hostel in for a drink unless they dine there as well. The hostel is a little difficult to find, as it is on the outskirts of the village which has a few small roads leading from the main road. Head to the northern end of Flodigarry and you will see a sign for the hostel just at the top of a small crest. A car may be necessary to reach this remote hostel.
