It's ok. Really. Not bad at all. I'm back in Glasgow and staying here for a few months. It's really not that bad! The place is spotless! Every morning about 9:30 someone starts drifting around with a bottle of bleach! Its an old building and the floors creak a bit but short of rebuilding the place there's a not a lot to be done about that! From what I can tell it seems to be family run with the owners living in, so probably a huge incentive to keep it liveable! The neighbourhood is safe but it's a long uphill walk from the subway station! Overall one of the better places I've stayed in.

Unclean and unhealthy Great location, but dirty -- very dirty. Absolutely, the worst and dirtiest place we stayed in three weeks and six countries. Old, but not charming -- rundown, only one shower of four working. Dust and dirt everywhere. This is not your mom's house for sure. Only the provided sheets were clean. Not only a poor value, but made us feel unsafe and unclean. Look elsewhere for a place to stay in Glasgow.

This is the filthiest hostel i have ever stayed in -- the floors, kitchen, and bathroom looked like they hadn't been cleaned in years, and the lighting was atrocious (had the TV not been blaring twenty-four/seven, it would still have been was impossible to even try to read in the sitting room)! Moreover, I didn't feel safe there -- the dorm rooms don't have locks which means anyone can come into your room when you're either not there, or when you're sleeping. The people who worked there were downright creepy and made me feel very uncomfortable. i'll be staying with hosteling international from now on. lesson learned.

I love Bunkum -- it's not filthy. It's not a five star hotel -- it is what it is, the owners are both friendly in their own way perhaps, I stayed at Bunkum for a month and had a great time.

I thought that the woman who took my payment was weird. She made me feel like I was a criminal because I had forgotten so sign my new credit card. (I was using it for the first time!! *arg*) The kitchen was big but I did not get the food system there because the "long stayers" have their own boxes, but if you put it on the shelf it's for everybody's use?? If you go there, ask. The lounge is very comfy! That is what I liked the most! The house is cute but hygiene lacks a bit (Stairs were really, really dirty and dusty). But our room was tidy and cute and I liked the beds although they made a lot of funny noises. :/ I think that there is a better place to be found in Glasgow, but if you just intend to stay for a short time it's ok.

While the place was friendly, the hygiene here is very poor. I'm not sure that the kitchen has ever been cleaned — the walls and floors are grubby and sticky. For the money a better, cleaner place can definitely be found.

I tell you this is the best place in Glasgow!!! I had fun when I was here, and it's close to the center of the city of the Glasgow. I recommend it!

For what it's worth Bunkum Backpackers is a nice laid-back hostel in a beautiful area of town, close to the art gallery, Queen Margaret Universty, and the Kelvin River Walkway system. I've stayed there a couple of times myself and very much enjoyed it. I'm told that the couple who owned it when I stayed have now moved up north to start a small B&B, but that the new owner is keeping the old warm atmosphere.
Its location is both its strength and its weakness. If you want to visit Glasgow to see the city itself, it's wondefully located in a beautiful area with a good mix of local pubs, cheap student spots and cultural activities. But it does require public transport to get to the city centre where the trains and busses are. That's no problem at reasonable times of day, as the rides are short and cheap and the Underground station is right around the corner, but if you intend to catch a RyanAir flight out of Prestwick at some ungodly early hour (as many of us cheap backpackers do), the time that you have to leave the hostel to get to the trains for Prestwick may be before the underground and day busses start running. Nonetheless, even with that one caveat, I still recommend them.
