I stayed at Hillside Court for five months (Nov '05 to Apr '06). Glen has always been accommodating and helpful -- I need my own big room, TV, heater, fresh bedsheets, and I travel quite a bit on the job. Most other girls are also friendly (just avoid the negative/always complaining ones). The location is great as I work in the city. Just ask those who have lived there for years, it's very liveable, close to amenities, and quite safe. The building is a tad old, but that gives it unique old world charm. Glen keeps upgrading with new furniture and bathroom renovations, and I see he places importance to key areas like hygiene and cleanliness. He's also always contactable on his mobile. Would have continued staying but family came over. Being a women-only hostel, I cannot expect Glen to agree on letting my hubby and three kids stay in it, can I?

I found that this place was very central and convenient, and would recommend it for people who like quieter and private accommodations, not a social and partying scene. The owner, Glen, was great, and his son and wife very lovely to have around. The rules are there so everyone can enjoy their stay. My stuff was always safe, and I never experienced any illnesses. I was in Melbourne for work from interstate for 8 months and was very happy with this place.

As a long term oversea student I was looking for a flat at the beginning, and prior to find a flat I moved in this Hostel for a minimum long term period which was 3 month then. However I found this place is perfact for me. Safe and Sacure, very convenient location for every thing, train, tram, shopping area, libarary, hospital...(for me I walked to the city every day). Most of all I loved the managers family. they are very friendly and helpful. I miss all the days of my time in this hostel. While I was residing here there sometimes were bad behaviour girls. They were always complaining, making problems, disturving other residents... But the manager was very indifferent for those girls and solved the problems straight away.

Depends on what you're looking for. Hillside Court works as a home for Outback Aussies and long-stay visitors, or for working or studying in Melbourne. It's an all-girl place, no boys allowed even as visitors. It's safe and the location is fantastic. It's within walking through the gardens to the city, nothing could be more perfect. It's not so great for backpackers though, too many rules. The feeling is a bit more "summer camp" than student housing though.
