Rich View Hostel is a nice place that seems to attract a varied and interesting clientele who seem to have in common a wish to get away from the well-trodden paths of Ireland's main tourist spots. The hostel is easy to find -- right next to the road in Keel and not far away from the few services that exist in the small village. Transport to the hostel is irregular but is on the main road to the spectacular cliffs and beaches a few kilometres further around the island.
The hostel is old and a bit rough -- or maybe you just call that character -- and the friendly manager doesn't get too carried away on domesticity. The views are still pretty rich, looking out across the bay to surf and rugged cliffs but this seems to be about to change -- construction was going on directly in front of the view of the bay and the Minaun Cliffs, with a two-storied building soon to appear.
The hostel may have a sort of vetting process -- when we asked if there was a bed, the manager replied that they were full. He asked a few more questions, then showed us up to the dorm where in fact there were a number of beds still available. We heard him repeat this same process with a couple the following night.
The beds are pretty old, squeaky, and lumpy. Being an out-of-the-way place, there isn't too much emphasis put on security -- they have neither door-locks nor lockers and this might not please everyone but it is quite a nice change from the ordinary. The bathroom is warm and clean with a good shower. The kitchen is small but makes for a nice environment to meet people staying there and adjoins the living/dining room in an open-plan kind of way. The dining room has uncomfortable arm chairs but good conversation, which seems to be a result of the absence of TV (good move) and good collection of music.
This hostel is good value and we would recommend. The hostel is walking distance to the shop and pub, fish and chip shop, beaches, and other points of interest.
