From our experience, Harpur House hostel may not be the most welcoming place. The person that opened the pretty Georgian red door looked and acted as though he had never seen a backpacker before in his life. It is also very difficult to find the hostel. Drogheda is situated on a steep hill and the hostel is at the very top. The train station is at the top of another hill and is rather far away. Once you do find it and are checked in, the only way to get back in is to ring the doorbell and wait for someone to come to the door. And do not be fooled by the sign that says bed and breakfast, there is no breakfast available. You can however use the very small kitchen which serves as the only common area for the hostel.
The rooms are clean, although they were very cold until a small radiator had a few hours to warm up the room. The beds are also extremely narrow, the duvets very short, and the pillows very flat. They do have sinks in the rooms however with a mirror.
The bathrooms (there are only two) were cold and not very user friendly. The upstairs bathroom has an old fashioned claw tub with no shower, but it was dirty and there was no hot water and no mirror. The downstairs bathroom looked as though the owners may use it as their own bathroom. It did have water pressure and hot water in the bath tub with a shower sprayer. However, there was a shower curtain to go around the claw tub that was too small and there was sign telling you that you must dry the floor when you have finished because they couldn't be bothered to put up a shower curtain big enough for the tub.
They seemed to be undergoing some renovations and apparently the only time that they could find to do these renovations was at 11:00 at night! Also the payphone in the hallway was broken. Don't ask to store your luggage because they don't do that anymore "because people would leave their luggage and not come back when they would say they would." The only redeeming thing that this hostel had was that we asked about a private room and then about the cheaper dorm rooms and the person on staff said that he would put us in the dorm rooms and just not check anyone else into that room. If all you need is a cheap bed and nothing more, then this place would be fine.
