HI - STF Malmö Eriksfält Hostel is just lovely. It's unusual to find a hostel that has had as much effort put into making it pleasant. It's not centrally located and you will have to brave the local bus system to find it, but it's worth the trip if you're looking for a great place to spend a night or two.
The Location
The hostel is in the middle of suburbia and is not located in the city center, so you will have to travel to get there if you have arrived in Malmo by bus or train. By bus -- catch bus number 2 towards Lindängen from the central station and get off at the Vandrarhemmet stop. Follow your map to the hostel about five hundred meters away down some side streets -- not difficult, but do use a map. The bus takes about twenty minutes. When you locate Backavägen street, you need to go right to the end and look around for the hostel sign (it's tucked in behind some trees). The hostel has plenty of car parking available both on and off-street. You can park in a fenced-in place for a price. The hostel backs onto the motorway, although there is no direct entrance from it. The road noise is not a problem at night.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms are mainly six-bed dorm rooms with bunk beds. The rooms are spacious enough, and have an ensuite bathroom and door locks. There are no lockers in the rooms. Each room has plenty of light, a table, chairs, and a tiny balcony.
Showers are in the basement and are single-sex communal with very little to protect your privacy. The showers are clean and well maintained and have dry benches for clothes. In the basement there is also a single-sex sauna with rostered hours for male or female use.
Common Spaces
This hostel excels in its common spaces. On the ground floor there is a large clean kitchen with everything you could need and modern appliances. This connects to a very large common area with plenty of tables and chairs. The common area is very well appointed for a youth hostel and is quite pleasant. There is also a separate common room in the basement with large televisions, comfortable lounge suites, and pleasant surroundings. It's an easy place in which to make yourself at home. This is a good place to plan your trip or meet other people, although it can be quiet at times. Unfortunately there is no internet available here, but they are well stocked with brochures and maps of the area. Outside, there is a picnic table and a park nearby if you're a smoker or just want to enjoy the long daylight hours.
Reception
Check-in is from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. only -- outside those hours, you will need prior arrangement. Reception is not open twenty-four hours a day, but you can come and go as you please with your keycard.
Summary
The atmosphere is quiet. The hostel has a breakfast buffet that costs extra and is in a different room from the common room, so residents are split up in the morning. There were few people around to socialize with (presumably because we were there on a calm day). The furnishings, layout, facilities, and surroundings of this hostel are all excellent and combine for a very pleasant stay. The only downside is the location -- however, once you've figured out the bus system, it's easy to get back into town. This place is a great value
