Tobermory Youth Hostel is found on Main Street in Tobermory, the "capital" of the Isle of Mull. It is painted pink so it is difficult to miss – although many nearby buildings are also painted suitably garish colours as well and have become a tourist attraction in their own right.
The rooms in the hostel are large and although a little rundown it is kept fairly clean. The bunkbeds are comfortable and the lounge area has a TV, plenty of seating, and tourist material. The bathrooms are even more rundown – hot water should not be a problem, although water pressure can be a little unreliable.
One small complaint is that check-in does not start until 5 – although luggage can be left there until then. Overbooking is a terrible practice and whilst mistakes do happen, overbooking in a hostel which has only 39 beds and only opens check in at 5 it is even more worrisome.
Tobermory is a small town, but there is a well stocked supermarket nearby (the Co-op) and some specialty shops selling chocolates and other delicacies. The nearby pubs may not be too welcoming of "incomers" at first but after a few drinks and a little singing, the atmosphere becomes almost friendly.
By public transport, getting to Tobermory can be tiring. Local (and very expensive) local buses meet ferries when they arrive into Craignure and travel up to Tobermory. There are limited other buses during the day to other parts of Mull – and travelling to Fionnphort and the Isle of Iona can take virtually a whole day because of the bus timetable.
