The Oxford Youth Hostel is well located right next to the train station and only a few minutes from the bus stop, so it's not far to carry your over laden backpack. It's also only about five minutes' walk from the city centre.
It is a big YHA and you need a card to stay or you can buy one when you arrive. But it must be one of the most friendly, warm environments of all the YHAs that we have seen. The staff are a mix of Aussies and English and extremely friendly. It seems the longer term staff and management are also helpful and friendly.
There is a range of services here with a library, kitchen, restaurant, lounge room, and games room. All are very homey and a good place to meet others. They seem to be well used throughout the day and night. Even during the day we saw people in there reading books, watching TV, and chatting -- probably because it is winter and too cold to be outside!
All of the rooms are heated, which is a bonus in the winter! The dorms are also sex segregated and cleaned every day with en-suite bathrooms that also smells clean! Overall it is very impressive, friendly, well located, and even the staff at the tourist information centre recommend it over the other youth hostel in town. They advise that people should book ahead in summer even though there are lots of rooms. They seem to offer everything up from twins to eight-bed rooms. They also give you keys so you can come and go as you like.
To get here turn right out of the train station and go under the bridge. The hostel is on the next street corner on the right hand side. If you are coming from the bus station turn right onto George Street out of the terminal and continue across the small bridge into Hythe Bridge Street. Then pass under the railway line. The hostel is on the next corner on the right.
