AthenStyle is a new hostel, opened in June 2008. It is part hostel, part hotel, and its character lies somewhere in between. It is extremely well-situated -- a two-minute walk from a metro station and walking distance to most major sights.
The Location
This hostel is perfectly located within walking distance of most sights, just at the bottom of the Acropolis and five minutes away from the Plaka and Thissio areas. It's also a two-minute walk from an area filled with local bars and restaurants. It's off the main street however, which far lessens the noise level. Good directions to the hostel can be found on the hostel website.
Rooms and Bathrooms
All rooms are key card-activated and dorms have large lockers for backpacks (although the top ones can be hard to reach for average-height people!). All bathrooms are in the room, and some have extra showers, but be prepared to wait your turn in the mornings. The shower is small but the water temperature and pressure are good. The bunk beds are generally not noisy and the new mattresses very comfortable, and each has its own reading light.
Common Spaces
The hostel has a lounge area, which includes the reception and a small bar, and where a simple breakfast of bread and jam is served. The area is good for meeting people but you're not allowed to bring in your own food or alcohol. There is a small guest kitchen, which is well-equipped and kept as clean as the guests choose to leave it.
AthenStyle also has a great rooftop terrace, also with its bar, with an amazing view of the Acropolis. Don't expect to hang out there all night though, because you'll get kicked out when they close it at 11 p.m. or midnight. Overall, the atmosphere can be fun, but the fun is a little restricted by the fact that it's also a hotel.
Summary
This hostel is kept clean and its location more than makes up for its drawbacks. Don't forget to check out the rooftop terrace!
