The Hostelz.com Review - Genuine, independent review you can trust.
Fireflies Hostel is a aimed at the young crowd who care less about comfort and more about the chance to surround themselves with like-minded people and be right where everything happens. The hostel is run by a couple of friends in their twenties, which gives it a nice, youthful atmosphere, but they are sometimes a bit too easygoing about the services they are expected to provide. There were problems with the hot shower at the time of review, and the Wi-Fi is far from being great, especially in the rooms.
The Location
Fireflies Hostel is located on the western side of the Thamel area of Kathmandu, which is known for being the tourist hub of the city. It is actually one in a row of hostels lined right next to each other. While it is located right in the middle of the busy downtown area, as it is on a quiet side street, it is perfectly calm at night and is a great place to have a good night's rest. The little alleyway that leads to the hostel can seem like a labyrinth and therefore, some people might not feel safe walking through it at night, but it is actually perfectly fine.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The first thing you may notice about Fireflies Hostel is the great style of its design. All the walls are individually painted with mandalas and Nepalese symbols, and random objects are incorporated into the decoration as well. However, on the negative side, the hostel is a bit crammed -- it has two floors and each floor hosts four or five rooms of four to twelve beds each and a toilet/bathroom area. The bunks in the smaller rooms are all divided by walls, which is nice as it gives some privacy in the small space. However, the twelve-bed rooms only have regular bunk beds. There are small lockers available as well. However, the individual plugs provided with the beds are almost non-functional and there is not enough room for all the backpacks, so everybody's belongings are mixing opposite the sleeping area.
Common Spaces
On the top floor of the hostel, a huge space serves both as a restaurant and a chill-out zone. The restaurant offers great prices and a wide choice of delicious dishes. There is also a very cool courtyard with the most funky kind of decorations one can find around. The owners organise social events every single night. Some days there is a jamming session, while on others there are guided city tours or cooking classes.
Summary
Fireflies Hostel is an ok choice if your primary consideration is being amongst young people in a friendly atmosphere. There is always a lot going on in the hostel, so it is impossible to get bored. However, in exchange you'll have to overlook the many shortcomings of the place, like the unpredictability of hot showers, the weak Wi-Fi, and the fact that the electric plugs are almost impossible to use.
