Hardwood Lodge is a small hostel with a few mixed, male, or female dorms with shared bathrooms spread over two floors; it's all air conditioned and inclusive of free breakfast, towel, and Wi-Fi. It is in a stunning building made entirely from wood.
The Location
The hostel is located well within the small town of Nyaung Shwe, with plenty of shops, travel agencies, and restaurants within a few minutes' walk. The walk to the harbour from where you may take boat trips is less than five minutes. It is possible to book a boat trip via the hostel, but it will be more expensive than going out to a travel agency.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There are two bathrooms, one per floor, inside each of which there are three toilet/shower rooms. They are bright, clean, and of a comfortable size. They have small shelves in each for toiletries (enough only for a bar of soap) and hooks for your towel and clothes. They have soap dispensers in each, but they are not filled.
The dorms have large bunk beds with comfortable mattresses, power points, and lights. They are made from wood, as is everything in the hostel, and are very sturdy. Within the rooms there are partition walls and curtains to separate the bunks. Effectively this makes an eight-bed dorm seem like four two-bed dorms. There are even separate lights for each compartment -- a great idea to minimise disturbance between travelers when needing to pack a bag in the early morning. The room doors do not lock and you only have access to small lockers for your valuables located outside of the rooms.
Common Spaces
Both floors of the hostel have large common areas with tables and chairs, plus upstairs there is a balcony. Sadly, there is a lack of atmosphere =- no music, no travelers, not even staff hanging around to cheer the place up. This could be due to it being relatively new, but even just playing some gentle music would improve upon the library-style feeling in this place.
The breakfast is served downstairs and is shan noodles (the local dish), which can be served vegetarian on request, plus tea or coffee and a banana. Free drinking water is available all day.
Summary
This beautiful hostel is clean throughout, well located, and well priced, but severely lacks atmosphere. It's a place to relax, but not a place to meet people.

• When you pass through entrance of Nyaung Shwe, Hardwood situated on fourth street on your right that is Kanthar 2nd street. At the beginning of Kanthar 2nd street you would see Kaung Kaung restaurant, after Kaung Kaung and Tiptop store on Kanthar 2nd street you would not miss the Hardwood Lodge. When you pass through main entrance of Nyaung Shwe, Mingalar Market (Main Market) is on your left and Hardwood is in the street of fourth right.
• Most of the bus/coach shop next to main entrance of the town. So you would need to walk a little bit more to Hardwood. It would be less than 200 meters. Or if your bus stops on Yone Gyi Street, you would need to walk toward T&T mini mart which is on Yone Gyi Street. Then you head toward north along Sao San Htun Street. After one block, you would reach a junction of Sao San Htun Street and Kanthar 2nd Street and you would see Hardwood Lodge on your right and creek to Inle Lake would be on your left. Using Google Map apps on your smart phone would be good option to get Hardwood Lodge from where your bus/coach stop.
