Havana Nilda’s Backpackers is located around five kilometers north of the center and easily reached by local buses. It’s in a tall apartment block right next to the Industriales baseball stadium. There is an issue with initial access to the building, as the front door is locked and you either must call the owners to let them know you’re downstairs waiting, or wait for someone else to enter or leave. You get keys on check-in, for which you pay a small deposit.
The Location
Havana Nilda’s is on the tenth floor of the apartment block, although the family live on the seventh floor (and check-in is located here too). Backpackers will be relieved to hear that there is an elevator! Nilda’s is one of five backpacker hostels in this building, and one of the more recent (it's been open just six years at the time of writing).
Rooms and Bathrooms
Nilda’s is another hostel in an apartment with one six-bed dorm and a two-bed dorm annex room. The six-bed dorm has fans and air conditioning, and the mattresses in the hostel are all of very good quality. The six-bed dorm has lockers, power points, and a small storage area for big backpacks. It also has a small balcony with a refreshing breeze, from where you can see all the way to El Capitolio in the center of town, and there is also a washing line. The two-bed dorm room is, however, very much the poor relation. The bunk beds are squeezed into a tiny room; it's almost a cupboard, so there is very little room for a large backpack and nowhere onto which to unpack your things. There is a fan for each bed, but the settings are either gale force or hurricane! There is only one free power socket for charging and there is also no door to this room. A curtain separates you from the sitting room and the kitchen, so you might be disturbed by noise or the lights from these rooms. There is only one bathroom to share and this has a hand basin, toilet, and shower with twenty-four-hour hot water.
Common Spaces
The sitting room has three comfy, matching couches and a small table plus a rocking chair! The tiny kitchen has only a sink, large fridge, and a microwave. There is also a laundry sink.
Summary
Havana Nilda’s is pretty good for the price. It is one of the cheapest backpackers in Havana, but it’s a little way out from the city center, the beaches, and the old city. The owners are extremely helpful regarding the bus routes and the best ways to get around, though. There are also a number of small local Cuban restaurants close by. If you get lucky, there might even be a baseball game on across the road. Sadly, you will have to pay the tiny ticket price, as Nilda’s does not have a view into the stadium! Nilda’s is great if you get a bed in the six-bed dorm, but it's only average if you’re stuck in the two-bed dorm.
