Hostal Yakumama is basic, cheap, and close to the center.
The Location
This hostel has a great location in the centre of downtown and only a short walk away from the main square. If arriving at the bus terminal in Cuenca, it is a twenty-five-minute walk, or you can take a taxi for a couple dollars on the meter. If you choose to walk, it may be worth asking the bus driver if you can get off the bus at Luis Caldero and from there you just keep walking in a straight line and it saves you about ten to fifteen minutes.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There are loads of rooms here and they are all massive and spacious in the old-style house. The beds are comfortable and the rooms are clean but at times the hostel can be absolutely freezing as a few of the window panes are missing so it takes on the outside temperature in freezing old Cuenca. Otherwise, it is pretty comfortable. They have lockers that are medium-sized to store valuables in to keep them secure.
There are loads of bathrooms and showers here. There is a boys and girls toilet block downstairs with a large mirror in each and sinks for teeth brushing. They have blocks of showers both downstairs and upstairs that are quite good with water pressure but the hot water will phase in and out quite often, leaving you freezing cold at times.
Common Spaces
A big bonus here are the massive common spaces. There is a large outdoor patio area with tables and chairs where they serve breakfast for a fee in the mornings. This area also has a bar that works sometimes in the evenings and they often have free salsa lessons or other activities happening here as well. There is a large kitchen off this area that you can use to prepare meals if you choose to cook during your stay.
Upstairs in the hostel is a lounge room with several rundown couches, a hammock, a television, and loads of movies for watching as well. They also have a book exchange.
Summary
This hostel has great potential but needs a little love and attention in the form of renovations. It is more affordable than some of the other hostels in the area so if you're happy to overlook a few things, it is quite a comfortable stay and the staff during our time here were friendly and very helpful.

Description
The Terrace on the 3rd floor gives you the chance to sleep at a very low price in the heart of Cuenca. There are also private double rooms for couples and 6-bed dorms for groups.
In the backyard of the building is a beautiful garden, including a SKATE-RAMP and a Bar with drinks. But no worries, we respect your sleep and turn off the music early.
In the front of the building, there is the bar/restaurant with free breakfast for hostal guests. Drinks and food are served all day until 10pm (excluding Sundays - breakfast only).

Hostal yakumama is easy to find in the center of Cuenca’s historic downtown. It is about a 20-30 minute walk from the bus terminal. When you exit the terminal by the cabstand, turn right and walk until the roundabout, then straight-left onto Avenida Huayna-Capac, right onto Gran Colombia, and left onto Luis Cordero. Hostal Yakumama will be near the end of the street on your left. Alternatively, you can take a taxi, which should cost from $2.50 to $3.
