Boulder International Hostel Reviews

Description

The Boulder International Hostel has been in operation since 1961, and under the same management for several decades. Its success has allowed it to expand to thirteen buildings, all within four blocks of each other in the University Hill District, giving it about four hundred beds and two hundred fifty rooms. Some of the buildings are leased to long term tenants, but at least four and sometimes all are available to travelers.

Our main office is only two blocks from the western edge of the University of Colorado, and is a leisurely fifteen minute walk from Naropa University. We are surrounded by college age activities and dwellings. Downtown Boulder is only a ten minute walk, and Boulder's bus system is famously on time, cheap, and handy.

The Boulder Hostel has been fortunate for those forty years, able to enjoy its commitment to the lifestyle through the satisfaction of its guests. And these guests come from every continent (yes, including Antarctica if you count scientists recovering from a nine month stay there) and most nations. There is no greater enjoyment than in introducing visitors from Beijing to people from Poland or Nigeria and have them go climbing for the day and seeing real friendships made. Better yet is watching three year olds from China, The Ivory Coast, and Norway carrying on animated conversations with each other in utterly separate languages, happy as clams. We have had Oxford dons who knew J. R. R. Tolkien well, superb musicians with violins made by Stradavarius, and visiting astronomers here for conferences on travel to Mars engage fellow guests in enduring conversation...and some music. We have had travelers back from some of world's trouble spots. We have had honeymooners and scout troops and international biking clubs. And we'd like to have you stay sometime.

Rules and Facts

* Generally speaking, the Hostel is full during the summer and early autumn, and our prices go up to reflect the Boulder tourist season. During this time, it is almost mandatory to make reservations for a private room. We do not take reservations for dorm beds at any time. Our prices go up and down in the course of a year. Check below for our current room costs.
* We have two types of accommodations: private rooms and dorm beds. Dorm beds are available in the main building only and are available to people with acceptable identification not from Colorado. Dorm beds do not come with linen, and we assume you have your own sleeping bag or linen; if not, there is a charge for use of ours.
* Depending upon the building, our bathrooms are either shared between two rooms or are multi-stalled units with showers betraying their fraternity past. Periodically, due to construction or repair, some rooms have, in effect, private baths. However, this ought no to be counted on, and we do not promise rooms with private baths by reservation.
* Acceptable Identification
The Boulder Hostel is particular about the identifications it accepts for registration. You must have, still valid by date and undamaged, one of the following: a foreign passport; an American driver's license from a state, protectorate or territory; or a Canadian driver's license. We do not accept American passports or mere identification cards from any of our states. The only exception to this rule is in the case of handicapped guests, who must have the proper papers.
* The Hostel is composed of buildings at least a half century old, sometimes sorority or fraternity houses, sometimes family dwellings. The Hostel does not have elevators or ramps, and most rooms are on the second or third floors. It does have a few accommodations for wheelchairs, but any person to whom this is a concern must call ahead to make a reservation OR fill out our reservation sheet completely and accurately.
* The Boulder Hostel comports itself to offer clean, safe, basic accommodations for the traveler on a budget. In a not inexpensive town, it has prospered by applying itself to being a plausible alternative for the quick overnight, a beachhead while looking for a new home, or a headquarters for a tourist group availing itself of Boulder's athletic endeavors, cultural events, municipal charms, or Colorado's natural beauty.
* Our rooms are cheerfully Spartan, and we offer community bathrooms, kitchens, laundermats and gathering rooms which normally feature a television.
* Children - We welcome (and enjoy having) children, but we insist they be with their guardians at all times. The Hostel considers anyone under the age of eighteen a child, primarily because the law does.
* Pets - We do not accept pets of any sort on our property. In Clintonian parlance the term "no pets" includes but is not limited to: your giant Komodo Dragon, however firmly caged; your magic cat, who never sheds or sprays and will actually iron our curtains rather than claw them; your aged, rare and very valuable clipped-wing Tasmanian Pteradactyl that will perch and drool on people's shoulders when it wishes but 'hardly ever nips'; and your divine puppy, housebroken at four weeks and who will never, ever bark but could, you know, softly hum snatches of Italian opera at night when you're out on doing research at our local brewpubs. Okay? We've heard it all. No pets.
