Get to know El Castillo (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in El Castillo.

El Castillo, Nicaragua, is a small town in the southeast of Nicaragua. There is also a town called El Castillo in Costa Rica, but they are not close to each other, so don’t mix them up!

El Castillo can only be reached by boat from San Carlos, over the San Juan River. This boat trip will take a few hours and the boats sometimes get busy, so it’s best to get to the dock an hour before departure time to buy your ticket. On the way, you will pass several villages, including Boca de Sábalos, where you can also find accommodation.

El Castillo is named after the Fortress of the Immaculate Conception, which you can see from almost everywhere in town, as it is built on a hill. The fortress includes a small museum and gives you an amazing view, so it’s definitely worth a visit. Another activity in town is the butterfly garden. The most popular activity from El Castillo is a trip to the nearby nature reserve. When taking a boat trip on the Rio San Juan, you will be able to see crocodiles, turtles, other reptiles, and birds. If you go on a hiking trip in the rainforest, there are interesting plants to see and you have the chance to meet monkeys and poisonous frogs.

When looking for a hostel in El Castillo, Nicaragua, you’ll mainly have to consider quality. The town is compact, so wherever you will stay, you will be close to the "main street," which has some restaurants, bars, shops, and laundry services. Hostels in El Castillo, Nicaragua, are like elsewhere in Nicaragua -- the quality might differ, but overall it should be acceptable. There is running water and electricity in town, but double check with your El Castillo, Nicaragua hostel. Many houses look out over the river, so when you have the chance to book a hostel in El Castillo, Nicaragua, with a river view, this is definitely worth it. Hostels in El Castillo, Nicaragua, don’t fill up that fast, so it is possible to go there without a booking. However, once you get there, you are pretty much stuck for at least a day, so if you want to stay at a particular El Castillo, Nicaragua hostel, it’s best to book at least one night in advance.
