Description

I live in a small, quiet stone village surrounded by vineyards, orchards, and hiking trails. Go on a walk with me along the old Roman ruins of the aqueduct that passes by the village leading to the amazing 2000-year-old Pont du Gard, a wonder of the world. Swim in the river or take a canoe under the bridge. Stay in my ancient limestone house, perhaps in the Joan d' Arc room, right around the corner from the patisserie-- the wine coop is nearby as is the restaurant/winery owned by the mayor, in the family for seven generations. Visit the best open air market in the world down the road in Uzes on a Saturday morning. Take my bikes to visit the neighboring medieval village on the hill, Castillon, with its four star restaurant. Included is our continental breakfast of fresh fruit salad, viennoiserie, yogurt, cereal, baguette and home made jam.

• BY PLANE OR TRAIN You may fly direct to airports in Nimes (closest), Montpellier (1 hour), Avignon (45 min) or Marseilles (90 minutes). If you are in Paris, go to Gare de Lyon and take the TGV fast train to Gare Avignon TGV. You can rent a car at the Avignon TGV train station, or take the Edgard A15 bus to my village, Vers.

• • NIMES until you see signs for Pont du Gard.
• • A-9 You will pass right over the A-9 Autoroute (take the Remoulins Exit from the A-9)
• • PONT DU GARD rive Gauche. The Pont du Gard has two sides, you want Rive Gauche. (As you approach Remoulins, turn right on the roundabout when you see the Carrefour supermarket and McDonald's)
• • UZES - left turn at first round-a-bout - sharp left at the second round-a-bout, follow the signs to UZES
• • VERS - One kilometer after the Pont du Gard Rive Gauche round-a-bout
• Take the first exit on the round-a-bout for the village of VERS, turning right. Go one kilometer and you will arrive at the village square. Just past the village square, turn left. Go up the street to the top past the PROXI store and turn right. You are near my door! I am the second door on the right, a green wooden double door under a stone arch, #16 route de Castillon.
• To park, go on past my door and make the next two left turns. Park there (but don't block the garage door, or park across from it). At my house, pull the chain on the left to ring the bell!

• Get on the autoroute A-7 to Lyon/Avignon. (It will take an hour and a half to my village.)

• • Leave A-7 when you see the sign for Avignon.

• • AVIGNON Head north on the A-9 direction Avignon.
• • REMOULINS From the A-9 autoroute take the Remoulins exit (about 20 minutes)

• BY BUS FROM AVIGNON
• The bus does not run on Dec 24, Jan 1, or May 1.
• Avignon has two train stations, Gare Avignon TGV and Gare Avignon SNCF in the town center.
• From Gare Avignon TGV, take the yellow Edgard A 15 bus outside and below the station entrance. Buses leave every day at 8:35, 11:30, 16:20 (except weekends), 17:25, and 18:35 (except weekends). If you want to see Avignon first, there is a blue shuttle bus to Avignon Centre every 15 minutes.
• From the Gare Avignon Centre SNCF. Find the main entrance to the station, and as you exit, turn to the right. Keep going past the entrance to the Hotel Ibis, down the old broken escalator across the street to the bus station entrance (Gare Routiere). Look at the schedule on the monitor to find when the next bus headed in the direction of Ales or Pont du Gard (A-15) leaves and see the platform (voie #11) where you get on the bus.
• Buses leave Avignon Gare SNCF to my village of Vers every day at 6:45 (except weekends), 8:45, 11:40 (16:30 except weekends), 17:35, and 18:45 (except weekends).
• Buses leave my village of Vers to Avignon at 6:44 and 7:55 (except weekends), 8:55 (every day), 13:20 (every day), 17:28 (except weekends), and 18:42 (except weekends).
• Buses also go to and from Nimes several times a day on weekdays, not weekends.
• Your destination is the 'CAVE' stop for the village of Vers-Pont-du-Gard. Your destination is NOT the site or monument of the Pont du Gard, but the village of Vers one or two stops after. The ride takes about 45 minutes. You can put your luggage in the side door of the bus and pay the driver when you get on.
• When you arrive, walk uphill to find the main drag of the village and the PROXI general store. I am directly behind the store just 35 steps, down the route de Castillon, the second door on the right, #16 route de Castillon. Look for a green arched wooden double door. Pull the chain on the left to ring the bell!
