(Northwest)
"HI - Portland, Northwest Neighborhood Hostel fulfills all the Hostelling International standards of comfort. Expect a very nice and quiet hostel, with plenty of comfort, and friendly staff. The Location The hostel is located in the Northwest neighbourhood of Portland, just one MAX-stop outside the Fairless Square. The hostel has its own little parking space where you can park your car, and there's a park just one block away. Shops, restaurants, and pubs are on the popular 23rd Avenue,...
(Troutdale)
"McMenamins Edgefield is located in Troutdale, but it's only about 25 minutes from downtown Portland by car. It's a European-style lodge with mostly private rooms, but they also offer a few shared dorm rooms. The lodge is in a historic old building on an estate dating back to 1911 (the locals claim it's haunted). The walls of the lodge are painted with all sorts of whimsical (and somewhat bizarre) illustrations dating back to the building's years as a retirement home. The rooms are...
(Downtown)
"This is a large hotel with some shared dorm rooms located in the northwest part of downtown. If you're looking for a fun hostel to hang out with other young backpackers, this may not be the best choice. There are occassionally some young travellers that stay here, but not many. And all of the rooms are smoking, so the whole place is smoky and dusty. The location is good if you want to be downtown, but if you have a car you'll have to either park far away or pay for a parking garage."...

We had the best time in Portland. We just love that city and people. We will always hold Portland close to our hearts. Thanks to the many nice people in Portland and Oregon who made our visit a nice one.

There are amazing restaurants here -- in particular a vegan and a Greek restaurant right smack in downtown. There are lots of gardens in and outside the city and tons of parks where you can see both Mt. Hood and Mt. St. Helens.

Portland is a liberal, hippie town that doesn't deserve to have consumers' hard-earned cash. Everywhere I went people were rude and stuck up. It is beautiful but the people make it not worth going back. It's not a recommended stay unless you go out of the city, maybe then you will have a better time than I did!

If you want to know what heaven looks like, just visit Portland, then you'll realise by yourself after seeing it. It is a great place to live peacefully, no crime and a safe place from natural disaster. Wonderful angels are living here, don't miss it.

I have never been to a better city. Its full of fun, history, art, music, good food and tone of micro-brewery beer, culture, and parks, and great libaries and shops! I have been to all the big and small cities in the United States AND WILL NEVER COME ACROSS A CITY THIS AMAZING! Bring a rain coat! -Amos

Portland may feel small, which is part of its charm, but it is not a "small American city". The metropolitan area population ranks 22nd in the USA at about 2.2 million people.

One word: Beautiful. Portland is not a big tourist city, but that is because people don't know what a gem it is. Come for a weekend. If you have a car you can drive to Mt. Hood and Multnomah falls, or if not just enjoy downtown. Be sure to visit Powell's, the biggest bookstore in the world, encompassing an entire city block.

Portland... it isn't a big tourist destination really, but there may be no better example of the ideal small American city. It's a young town and the locals are some of the most genuinely friendly people you'll find anywhere. It has a lively downtown and nightlife. And it's surrounded on all sides by great outdoor hiking areas, including the spectacular Columbia River Gorge. Mt. St. Helens is a short drive away, and if you're into skiing, check out nearby Mt. Hood. It's the only mountain in North America with year-round snow skiing.
